The organization, which began in Cave Junction, now has quarters at the museum and is planning a number of artistic pro- jects. Phone Reni Schaeffer at 596-2680 for more information. ‘Jack’ Rollins Two artists join talents for exhibits Illinois Valley artists George Richards and Cas- sandra Newton-Miller have established a partnership. Their first large art dis- play is on exhibit at the “A Creative Space” room above Blue Moon Café in Cave Junction and is a result of the July Art Walk. The display will remain during July and into August. The award-winning artists plan to work together in their respective studios, occasionally having invita- tional exhibitions of new artwork at Newton-Miller’s studio on Hwy. 199 a mile south of Cave Junction. Several galleries on the coast now exhibit work of both artists including “Words and Pictures” in Brookings and “Grey Whales” in Gold Beach. Their work is in many pri- vate collections in Oregon, California, Washington and Nevada. Newton-Miller, profi- cient in scratch-art and soap- stone carving, recently has begun to work in oils (florals, landscapes and fig- ures) as well as experiment- ing with scratch-oil. Richards creates land- scapes, florals and figures, some with a touch of sci- ence fiction. Both artists have been active in Illinois Valley Fine Artists Inc. for at least 14 years, participat- ing in many local art events. As part of their plans, the pair will participate in a photography study tour by train to Denver, Colo. in October. The tour will take them over the Sierras, pro- viding many opportunities to take photos of the scenery for future artwork. Mr. Rollins was born March 6, 1919 in Dallas, Texas to Thomas Tresvan Rollins and Grace (Hunt). He farmed with his family as a young man in Texas, until he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943. Before his discharge nearly three years later, he served with the Cavalry. He campaigned in India- Burma, Central Burma, and was in the China Offensive with E Troop 124th Infantry. The 124th Cavalry (dismounted) was part of the Mars Task Force operation. As one of two regiments involved in establishing an American combat division in the China- Burma-India theater, its task was to clear the Burma Road. He earned marksmanship and campaign medals, plus a Bronze Star for good conduct. After marrying his sweet- heart on July 4, 1946 in Hum- boldt County, Calif., he worked for years in sawmills before (Photos by ‘Illinois Valley News’) gaining employment with Pa- cific Lumber Co. He was a locomotive engineer, hauling from “the woods” into Scotia. He retired in 1984, and he and his wife of 59 years, Hettie Mae Rollins, moved to Cave Junction in 1985 after living for short periods in Missouri and Fortuna. Mr. Rollins owned and enjoyed horses, hunting and fishing. His family said that he had what many recognized as a keen sense for good horses, and he enjoyed finding, raising, training and riding many American Quarter Horses. He was loved as a husband, father and grandfather, being the pa- triarch to a strong family. Besides his wife, he is survived by all eight of his children: Tommie Joe Rollins, Virginia Mac Lamb, Annette Smith and Lonnie David Rollins, all of Cave Junction, Shirley Ann Houseworth, of Hydesville, Calif., Garvin Earl Rollins, of Bridgeville, Calif., and Walter Floyd Rollins Jr., and Paul Edward Rollins, both of Fortuna; a foster-son, Rich- ard Wallace Shawver, of Bridgeville; 19 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
