Page 4 Edith Violet Phillips Visitation for Edith Violet Phillips, 97, of Cave Junction, who died Saturday, July 16, 2005 at Three Rivers Commu- nity Hospital in Grants Pass, will be Monday, July 25 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Illinois Valley Funeral Home Chapel. A memorial service will follow at 1 p.m. Afterward, the family will hold a private inter- ment at Laurel Cemetery in Cave Junction. Mrs. Phillips was born Edith Violet Felt on May 17, 1908 in Minneapolis, Minn. to Hallie (Casey) and Peter Fre- derick Franklin Felt. In 1911 she traveled with her parents via covered wagon to Bosano, Alberta, Canada, where she lived with the Blackfoot Indi- ans for three years. Her family returned to Minneapolis in 1914; moved to Anoka, Minn., and Montana, finally settling in Portland, Ore. In 1919. She attended Franklin High School there, where she learned to play violin. In 1923 she formed a country dance band that played at engage- ments in around the Portland area for the next 11 years. In 1927 she met Alvin Jesse Phillips, while audition- ing him as a tenor banjo player for her band. They were mar- ried July 14, 1928 in Portland. In 1935 they moved to Canby to start a box factory. In 1941 they moved to Terre- bonne, where they owned an 80-acre ranch. In 1944 they moved to Crescent City, Calif., and owned and operated Cres- cent City Machine Works, where she worked as office manager. She also played her St. Patrick of the Forest Catholic Church On the 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time, the reading from 1 Kings will reveal what Solomon asked for when God said, “Ask something of me and I will give it to you.” Solomon asked for under- standing that he might distin- guish right from wrong. She was active in Daugh- ters of the Nile. She also was an accomplished carpenter, and in 1945 built the family home in Crescent City from the ground up. In July 1963 she and her husband purchased the 100- acre Fort Briggs Ranch on Holland Loop and raised thor- oughbred race horses, Appa- loosa horses, and cattle. She was a member of Illi- nois Valley Grange 370. In 1986 she divorced her husband of 58 years, and in 1989 sold the ranch and retired. Due to ill health she moved to Fairview Transitional Center in 2000. She is survived by her daughter, Peggy Phillips, of Cave Junction; a granddaugh- ter, Sharran Blacksmith, of Sparks, Nev.; four grandsons, Kendell Phillips, of Cave Junc- tion, Kerby Phillips, of Kerby, and Robert Hodges and David Hodges, of Palmer, Alaska.; 11 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren Cheryl Anne Attebery A memorial service was held Saturday, July 16 for Selma resident Cheryl Anne Attebery, 49, who died at home July 8, 2005. The memorial was con- ducted at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Cave Junction. Remembrances can be made to that denomination at P.O. Box 811 in Cave Junc- tion. Mrs. Attebery was born Dec. 27, 1955 in Los Angeles. She moved from California to Grants Pass in 1974, and to Selma in 1979. She was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Cave Junction since 1970, and volunteered with the denomination’s field ministry. Her hobbies included cro- cheting, playing board games, driving and traveling, and fish- ing at Lake Selmac. Surviving are two sons, Shane Attebery, of Cave Junc- tion, and Bobby Eggleston, of Fort Benning, Ark.; a daughter, Shanna Attebery Steiner, of Selma; a sister, Sharon Blunt, of Selma; two brothers, Ed- mund Eastwood Jr., of Long- view, Wash., and Christopher Eastwood, of Robbins, Calif.; and eight grandchildren. Arrangements were di- rected by Southern Oregon Cremation Services, of Grants Pass. Timber sale blocked by felled trees Using chainsaws to cut logged timber, a group call- ing itself Wild Siskiyou Ac- tion (WSA) has erected a “log cabin fortress” to block access to the Hobson Tim- ber Sale near Galice. The group also used boulders to cut off “vehicle access to an area now re- ferred to by many as the ‘Siskiyou Free State’,” ac- cording to a news release. WSA added: “An un- usual new form of tree sit has been built in a unit of the sale that connects many trees together across multi- ple acres with a rope-work network that suspends an activist in midair while pre- venting any trees from being felled in the area without risking the life of the sus- pended person.” The Hobson Sale is part of the Biscuit Fire salvage logging from the wildfire that occurred during 2002.
