The day-long event attracted 61 entries, more than last year. The club plans to make next year’s show a two-day affair. JoCo employment stats looking good IN THE SWIM - A grand reopening of the Cave Junction Swimming Pool attracted large crowds of valley residents Saturday, June 25. The free event included hot dogs and soft drinks. Bob Schumacher (right) presented Rita Dyer a $500 check from Illinois Valley Community Development Organization (IVCDO) to help with pool operations. Dyer is chairman of the CJ Pool Committee; Schumacher is ex- ecutive director of IVCDO. The ‘thumbs up’ represents the ‘Can Do’ attitude of IVCDO. Pool Manager Cynthia Hobbins said that open swim hours are Mondays through Fridays from 1 to 5 p.m. Summer passes are available which saves nearly 50 percent on regular admission for those who use the pool regularly. She added that even at the regular admission price of $4, patrons are getting 4 hours of safe, clean fun, and a free lunch for those 18 and younger. Hobbins said that she is looking for 20 people to register and pay for the adult water aerobics class ‘as soon as possible.’ Two teen swims are scheduled during July by the Boys & Girls Club. Hobbins is also looking for more sponsors for night and Saturday swims. For more information phone 592-3990. Besides a May drop in unemployment, during the past 12 months in Josephine County, nearly all industry sectors gained employment, said Oregon Employment Dept. (OED). Those posting the most notable gains are construc- tion (+70), manufacturing (+140), wholesale trade (+70), transportation, ware- housing and utilities (+50), professional and business service (+110), leisure and hospitablity (+40). The only sectors show- ing a decline were educa- tional services, down 20 jobs during the year; local government education (-30), and state government (-10). Total payroll employ- ment in Josephine County rose by almost 400 jobs in May, said OED, with con- struction, manufacturing, retail trade, leisure and hos- pitality, and government all posting gains. The county’s unem- ployment rate fell from a revised 7.4 percent in April to 6.8 percent in May. The unemployment rate was also lower than May 2004, when it stood at 7.5 percent. Payroll employment increased by 550 jobs dur- ing the past 12 months, or a gain of 2.3 percent. There were approximately 2,350 estimated as unemployed in Josephine County’s labor force of 34,750. During May, construc- tion and manufacturing each posted a 30-job gain. Retail trade employment rose by 50, with further gains antici- pated when Parkway Vil- lage Shopping opens. Leisure and hospitality gained 170 in May, bringing the over-the-year increase to 40 jobs. Government employ- ment added 60 jobs, with gains in federal (+20) , state (+10), and local government education (+40).
