Micro Business Loan Funding Always Available! ‘Ted’ Hooey Longtime Illinois Val- ley resident Norman “Ted” Hooey, 91, of Cave Junc- tion, died Thursday, May 26, 2005 at Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 4 at 11 a.m. at Bridgeview Com- munity Church in Cave Junction. Charles Bridges will officiate. Mr. Hooey was born on April 19, 1914 in Moose- jaw, Canada to Frank and Rachel Hooey. He received the nickname “Ted” for his rough-and-ready attitude after Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. Mr. Hooey married Emily Fisher in Seattle, and they lived there until moving to Cave Junction in 1946. He worked for a log- ging company in and around Illinois Valley for many years. He helped build many of the forest service roads in the area. Mr. Hooey loved music and reading, but his retire- ment hobby was horses. He enjoyed riding and going to campouts and workshops sponsored by the Klamath Falls Cattlemen’s Associa- tion. He rode in the I.V. Li- ons Club annual Labor Day Parade until he was 86. He was a familiar sight on his big Tennessee Walker, “Mr. Tibbs.” He was a member of Bridgeview Community Church. Mr. Hooey is survived by three sons, Ted Hooey, of Starky, Ore., Steve Hooey, of Cave Junction, and Norman Hooey, of Phoenix, Ore.; a brother, Slim Hooey, of Mt. Vernon, Wash., a half-sister, Ellen, of Central Point, Ore., seven grandchildren; five great- grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years; and a sister, Ethel, of Seattle. Loyal G. Harper Grants Pass resident Loyal G. Harper, 84, died Monday, May 23, 2005 while salmon fishing along the Rogue River. A funeral service was held Monday, May 30 in the chapel at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Grants Pass Stake Center. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Harper was born on March 30, 1921 in Densmore, Kan. His parents were James and Elizabeth Stubbs; and he was the 10th of 11 children. The family moved to Medford during the Depression. Mr. Harper served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, mostly aboard a tug- boat in the Mediterranean Ocean. On June 16, 1945 he married Evelyn Mae Van Hise. He owned and operated a dental laboratory in Grants Pass for many years. He was quite active in the LDS Church, serving in several leadership positions, includ- ing two times as bishop of the Grants Pass Third Ward. Mr. Harper and his wife served a mission for the church in the area of Spo- kane, Wash. Besides church work, he enjoyed home con- struction, building nearly all his family homes and serv- ing as his own contractor. Besides his wife of 60 years, Evelyn Harper, of Grants Pass, he is survived by four sons, Steven Harper, of Corvallis, Brian Harper, of Olympia, Wash., Timo- thy Harper, of Boise, Idaho, and Brent Harper, of Orem, Utah; 23 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Sharon Gasser, of Reno, Nev., and Veronica Thomas, of Newport Beach, Calif.; a brother, Pete Gasser, of Las Vegas, N.M.; two sisters, Robin Coatney, of Selma, and Michelle Gasser, of Cave Junction; four grand- children; and many nieces and nephews. Josephine Jennings Gasser A private service was arranged for Cave Junction resident Josephine Jennings Gasser, 64, who died Wednesday, May 25, 2005 at her residence. Illinois Valley Funeral Home took care of arrange- ments. Mrs. Gasser was born on Dec. 9, 1940 at Fort Ord, Calif. She moved to Illinois Valley in 2002 from Bel- lingham, Wash. She enjoyed reading and writing, as she wrote short stories. The family suggests memorial dona- tions to the ASPCA for the protection of animals. Mrs. Gasser is survived by two sons, Art Gasser Thomas, of Lummi Island, Wash., and Bill Thomas, of Bellingham; two daughters, Wanona Lee Dodge A graveside service was held Wednesday, June 1, 2005 for Cave Junction resi- dent Wanona Lee Dodge, 87, who died at home Thurs- day, May 26. The service at Eagle Point National Cemetery was conducted by the Rev. Dan Robinson, of Takilma Bible Church. Interment was next to her husband, James Dodge, who died in 1984.
