First-class postage could
rise to 39-cents early in 2006
if a U.S. Postal Service
(USPS) request is approved
by the Postal Rate Commis-
sion.
USPS is seeking a 5.4
percent across-the-board rise
for all postage rates. The in-
crease is sought because of
Congress requiring that USPS
establish a $3.1 billion escrow
fund.
If that requirement is
removed by Congress, the
rate increase would be with-
drawn. The last postal rate
increase was in 2002.

VIKING STREAKERS - Eighth-grader Sam Winter jumps his way to win
the 200-meter hurdles. The boys also won the 100-meter dash, the high
jump and the 4x100 relay. The Vikings did well considering they had the
smallest group at the meet against Rogue River, Lincoln Savage and
Shady Cove. Lorna Byrne will compete Friday, April 15 in Cave Junction
against schools including Lincoln Savage and Rogue River.

that someone driving a light
gray or blue vehicle struck his
car on the driver’s side door
and didn’t stop. His passenger
had shoulder pain, he said.

*Illinois River “Forks”
State Park was patrolled at
12:50 a.m.
*People riding ATVs were
causing a sleepless night for
one caller on Illinois River
Road around 1 a.m.
*Swerving to avoid a deer
or possibly a stray horse, a
vehicle went into a ditch in the
500 block of Lakeshore Drive
around 1 a.m., causing damage
to a guard rail.
*A large rock slide was
noted in the 5000 block of Illi-
nois River Road at 2 a.m.
*Two horses and fog pre-
sented a potential road hazard
near Lake Selmac RV Resort at
4:35 a.m.
*Although one Cave Junc-
tion youth was told by another,
“After school I’m kicking your
a--, and even your mother
won’t recognize you,” all par-
ties were “counseled,” as the
incident was deemed “verbal in
nature only.”
*On S. Kerby Avenue a
woman found sleeping in an
abandoned mobile home was
contacted and “trespassed.”
*An intoxicated man sit-
ting and drinking in his pickup
truck on S. Caves Avenue was
advised to have his wife take
over the driving.
*A group of “homeless
males” on a vacant lot on S.
Caves Avenue dropped their
pants and urinated as school
children walked by, a com-
plainant said.
*Continuing difficulty
with vandalized flowerboxes in
Downtown CJ was reported.
*A donkey and a mule
were said to be on Caves Hwy.

*A clean-cut young man
in a sporty jacket and carrying
a machete was reported walk-
ing eastbound on Caves Hwy.

someone reported at 1 p.m.
*On O’Brien Road a mo-
torcycle had been taken with-
out permission, it was reported.
*On W. River Street, an
11-year-old boy who acciden-
tally hit a neighbor’s child was
cussed out and threatened by
that neighbor, he said and he
requested that a deputy talk to
the man.
*Charged with failure to
appear (FTA) on charges of
reckless driving and reckless
endangering, Erik J. Kovis, 36,
also was cited to appear on
charges of driving while sus-
pended (DWS) and driving
uninsured in the 400 block of
S. Redwood Hwy. at 8 p.m.
Saturday, April 2
*On Lone Mountain Road
around 3 a.m. a man said that
he was assaulted, resulting in a
broken jaw, and that $400 cash
was stolen from him.
*During extra patrol at
“Forks” State Park it was noted
that the fence is badly in need
of repair.
*Around 5 a.m. a man on
Josephine Street was kicked in
the face while he slept. The
four assailants were upset
about a friend’s jaw being bro-
ken earlier, according to the
man.
*People in a red two-door
vehicle were pounding on a the
doors at Kerbyville Museum
just after 5 a.m., a man said.
*Five people in a red vehi-
cle were stopped on Redwood
Hwy. at Lakeshore Drive at
5:21 a.m. They said they were
going to work, and denied
stopping at the museum.
*On Redwood Hwy. at
Willow Lane at 5:51 a.m.,
deputies arrested four of five
people in a red vehicle: Mat-
thew Charles Bosse, Brian
Edward Smith and Matthew
Roy Barbosa, all 23; and Jason
Edmund Dangerfield, 24. All
were charged with first-degree
burglary and third-degree as-
sault and lodged in Josephine
County Jail.
*At Rough & Ready Park,
a woman complained of being
bitten by a dog. The case was
referred to Animal Control.
*In the 200 block of S.
Redwood Hwy. around 6 p.m.,
Diane M. Sheldon, 18, was
arrested and lodged in county
jail on charges of possession
and distribution of a controlled
substance, (PCS, DCS), mari-
juana, and manufacture of a
controlled substance, (MCS),
methamphetamine.
*Detained in the 500
block of S. Redwood Hwy. at
8:30 p.m., James R. Meyer, 33,
was cited to appear on charges
of driving under the influence
of an intoxicant (DUII), reck-
less endangering, DWS and
failure to wear a seatbelt.
*Glen E. Reese, 40, was
cited on charges of DUII and
refusal to submit to a breath
test in the 500 block of S. Red-
wood Hwy.
Sunday, April 3
*OSP was notified of four
large boulders lined up in the
300 block of Caves Hwy.
around midnight.
*An ex-tenant, who
gained access to a residence on
Caves Hwy. through a win-
dow, was told to vacate imme-
diately.
Monday, April 4
*Charged with parole
violation and absconding,
Joshua Porter, 25, was arrested
at quarter past midnight in the
200 block of Josephine Street
on a charge of fourth-degree
assault and lodged in Josephine
County Jail.
*Near 1 a.m. on Lister
Way at Boundry Avenue, Jerry
Allen Gunter, 18, was arrested
on charges of attempting to
elude, reckless endangerment,
reckless driving, MCS, PCS
and DCS/methamphetamine,
and criminal forfeiture. He was
lodged in county jail.
*Fleix Manolo Pineda
Monterroso, 23, was cited on a
charge of violation of the basic
rule (driving too fast for condi-
tions) at 2:30 a.m. on Redwood
Hwy. at Draper Valley Road.
*After chasing three or
four boys from the vicinity, a
man on Deer Creek Road re-
ported damage to the grill of
his tractor and a missing bat-
tery.
*A large roll of money
was found at CJ Select Market,
a woman said.
*Herbert K. Bright, 50,
was cited to appear on a charge
of DUII. He was also cited for
lack of an operator permit’s
and driving uninsured.
*A man on Lone Moun-
tain Road said that a large
quantity of a prescription drug
was taken.
