Sean Valdez, 30, of Grants Pass, who has been with JCSO for seven years, faces a misdemeanor charge of fourth-degree assault in connection with a Friday, March 25 incident involving the 19-year-old woman, said Josephine County Undersher- iff Brian Anderson. “He got into an argument with his fiancée,” Anderson said. A sheriff’s sergeant was dispatched to Valdez’s home on Cloverlawn Lane near Grants Pass just after mid- night in response to a re- ported disturbance. Anderson said that the sergeant re- quested assistance from Ore- gon State Police (OSP) after realizing he was headed to the detective’s residence. After initial investiga- tion, Valdez was taken by OSP to the Josephine County Jail on the assault charge. Anderson said that Valdez was released on bail approxi- mately an hour later. While OSP investigates, Anderson said that sheriff’s officials will conduct an inter- nal investigation. Valdez has been exoner- ated in connection with a shooting incident Feb. 20. He fired at and wounded a man driving a log skidder, who refused numerous orders to stop, and who had fired a shotgun at officers. The suspect, Michael J. Murray, began driving the large piece of heavy equip- ment toward officers and resi- dences when Valdez fired. Hall Funeral Home in Grants Pass. Private interment followed at Pioneer Masonic Cemetery. Mrs. Morris was born on May 10, 1917 in Ely, Nev. In 1920 she and her family trav- eled alone from Ely to Gold Beach, Ore. by horse and wagon. The trip took three months. When she was 13, the family moved to Bellingham, Wash., and four years later relocated to Oakland, Calif. Mrs. Morris obtained a job singing in Pirates Cave, a Western night club in San Francisco. She traveled by ferry, as the Bay Bridge wasn’t built. She met her husband, Jim Morris, at the night club, and they married on Sept. 12, 1941. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1938 through 1948. They settled in Hayward, Calif. Mrs. Morris drove 15-ton semitrucks and trailers during World War II for a Navy sup- ply depot in Oakland. She re- ceived several promotions and a citation for her service as office-in-charge of transporta- tion. From 1952 through ‘55 she worked for General Elec- tric as an accounting clerk. The couple opened Jim’s Sentry Market (later Drive-N- Save and now Select Market) in Cave Junction and operated it from 1972 through ‘79. Mrs. Morris was an avid golfer and worked with many other Illinois Valley residents to get the I.V. Golf Course in shape. She was the first direc- tor of I.V. Golf Club, and the sole decorator of the club- house. She played golf until 1992, when she suffered a knee injury. She served four years on the first Cave Junction Medical Board, the forerunner to the group that oversees Siskiyou Community Medical Center. The board petitioned physi- cians to work in Illinois Valley. Mrs. Morris decorated and paid for the first furnishings of I.V. Senior Center. Always wanting to help, on several occasions she aided the Head Start program in Cave Junction with Easter baskets and Christ- mas baskets full of gifts for children. “Sax” was a talented artist, and her favorite subjects were portraits and landscapes, espe- cially the Redwoods. Several of her works are hung at I.V. Senior Center; and a large por- trait of George Washington hangs in the Kerby Belt Ma- sonic Lodge. She also designed the cou- ple’s home. She enjoyed play- ing bridge. Mrs. Morris trav- eled extensively with her hus- band, and occasionally on her own. She visited China, Japan, Egypt, Italy, France, England, and all of the Holy Land. Davis A memorial service is planned for J.C. Davis, of Cave Junction, on Saturday, April 9 at 4 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, in Cave Junction. Mr. Davis died March 29, 2005, at Oregon Health Sci- ences University Hospital in Portland due to injuries from an auto accident in Cave Junc- tion March 25. Mr. Davis was born Oct. 7, 1923 in Wewoka, Okla. He lived for many years in Fresno and Sacramento before moving to Cave Junction in 1990 with his Mother, Ada Davis, to be near family. He was a Chevy mechanic and greatly enjoyed taking apart and fixing all things me- chanical. He also enjoyed visit- ing with his many friends around town and talking about the Bible, cars, old Western movies and his experiences in Japan during World War II. Mr. Davis leaves behind a niece and her family of Cave Junction; and other nephews and nieces, including a great nephew. Burial is to be at Sunset Lawn Cemetery in Sacramento.
