Applications for pre- college and pre-university young women are available from high school counseling offices or by phoning Ron- ine Broeffle at 579-2857. The y also can be downloaded from zonta.org. The YWPA goal is “to encourage more young women to participate in public and political life by recognizing a young woman’s commitment to the volunteer sector; evidence of leadership achievements; and a dedication to the ad- vancement of the status of women.” Scholarships of $1,000 each were awarded Sarah K. Brown, who graduated with the Illinois Valley High School Class of 1999; and Pamela Charbonneau, IVHS Class of 2003. The Grants Pass Zonta Club awards $1,000. District recipients receive $500; and five international awards are chosen from the district re- cipients to receive an addi- tional $1,000 each. Josephine County Sheriff’s Office Major Crime Unit van (Photo by JCSO) Betty Jean Langfield A graveside service for former Illinois Valley resi- dent Betty Jean Langfield, 75, who died Jan. 10, 2005 at home in Hermiston, Ore., was held Friday, Jan. 14 at Hermiston Cemetery. Mrs. Langfield was born on Aug. 15, 1929 in Davenport, Iowa. She was raised in Iowa, and later in Alameda, Calif., where she graduated from high school. She married Robert R. “Bob” Langfield on June 19, 1949 in Alameda. They lived in California, Oregon and Washington before set- tling in Cave Junction, where they lived for 17 years before relocating to Hermiston in 2003. She enjoyed playing bingo, gardening, traveling, and her dog, “Tiska.” She was known for loving her family. She is survived by her husband, Bob Langfield, of Hermiston; seven sons, Pe- ter A. Langfield, of Red Bluff, Calif., Robert M. Langfield and Dan J. Lang- field, both of Klamath Falls, Jeff E. Langfield and Patrick E. Langfield, both of Cape Coral, Fla., and Mark K. Langfield and John R. Langfield, both of Cave Junction; three daughters, Jackie A. Langfield, of Klamath Falls, Kathy J. Hamilton, of Butte Falls, Ore., and Mary G. Sunday Services: 11 a.m. 592-2006 AMR donates van for JCSO crime unit Josephine County Sher- iff’s Office (JCSO) has ac- quired a Major Crime Unit scene investigation van from American Medical Re- sponse (AMR). The van is a 1995 Ford converted ambulance, adapted for its current use as a crime scene vehicle. AMR provides local, state and national medical and transport services to residents of Grants Pass, Cave Junction and all of Josephine County. JCSO, the Grants Pass Dept. of Public Safety and the local office of the Ore- gon State Police work closely with AMR in Jose- phine County. Josephine County law enforcement depends on its partnership with AMR, said JCSO, add- ing that it is “thankful to AMR for this most generous donation.” Since January 2003 the JCSO Major Crime Unit and its sister agency, the Josephine Interagency Nar- cotics Team, have investi- gated seven homicides, six criminally negligent homi- cides, more than 60 methamphetamine manufac- turing labs and six super marijuana grows averaging more than 2,000 plants each. At each incident, an enormous amount of evi- dence had to be processed. Processing of evidence is crucial to the successful prosecution of many crimes, said JCSO. “Without proper crime scene processing, many criminals would go free and not be held accountable for their crimes,” said JCSO. Having a well-equipped vehicle to process crime scenes is essential to a proper criminal investiga- tion.
