YULE BURNING - One more blaze of glory for Christmas trees is offered at First Baptist Church of Selma from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15. The church is in-between Selma Select Market and Selma Community & Education Center. FOOD FOR SRI LANKA - Youth from Cross Quest Expeditions and many Illinois Valley churches will host a dessert fund-raiser for World Concern’s relief efforts in Sri Lanka. The event will be held Sunday, Jan. 16 from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Lorna Byrne Middle School cafeteria. Youth will auction many desserts including fudge, pies and cheesecake, plus goods and services. They also will share “some talents.” To donate desserts or other items, phone 592-3329. MEMORY COURSE - “Memory Difficulties: Should I be Worried?” is a course that will be taught by OSU Extension teacher Sharon Johnson. It is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 20 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at Josephine County Extension Auditorium, 215 Ringuette St., Grants Pass. There is a $5 fee. Phone 476-6613 to register. ANTI-BATTERING - “Helping Children Who Have Been Exposed to Batters” is the title of a free 16- week course that will begin in February. Offered by I.V. (Mark Twain) Swanson aiding victims A Grants Pass company has pledged another $50,000 in matching funds for those making contributions for South Asia tsunami relief, resulting in a goal of $150,000 in contributions. The company, Swanson Group Inc., a family owned and operated forest products company, has donated $50,000. And according to Swanson Group President Steve Swanson, “We have already pledged $50,000 outright to the American Red Cross (ARC). In addi- tion, we are challenging our employees and fellow com- munity members to help us raise another $100,000. “For every dollar do- nated, the Swanson Group will match that dollar up to a matching maximum of $50,000 total.” Contributions for tsu- nami relief made to the ARC chapters in Swanson Group communities will be matched dollar-for-dollar. Swanson Group, a privately held company with corpo- rate offices in Glendale, also has facilities in Grants Pass, Roseburg, and Noti. Donors can send or de- liver checks to the ARC Rogue Valley Chapter at 745 N.E. Seventh St., Grants Pass 97526; or 60 Hawthorne St., Medford, Ore. 97504. The chapter can be reached at 779-3773 to make a contribution with a credit or debit card. Donors should specify that their contribution is for tsunami aid, and that they want to participate in the Swanson Group match program. Commissioner Jim Rid- dle, who has served two years on the Josephine County Board of Commis- sioners, was elected to his second consecutive term as chairman. Incoming Commission- ers Dwight Ellis and Jim Raffenberg elected to keep him in the position during the meeting held in Grants Pass Wednesday, Jan. 5. Following approval of Riddle as chairman, Raffen- berg nominated Ellis as vice chairman. That also was approved 3-0. Raffenberg and Ellis took their oaths of office Monday, Jan. 3. They were victors in the November general election. Raffenberg defeated two-term commissioner Jim Brock for Position 2. Ellis beat Cherryl Walker for Position 3. Ending 22 years of ser- vice as a commissioner is Harold Haugen. He was defeated by Brock in the May primary, as Brock grabbed Haugen’s seat. O’Brien residents would like to have fire safety information mailed to all residents, brush thinning, additional water storage at various locations and a barn- burning training exercise for IVFD volunteers. Residents of the Hol- land area indicated that they would like to repair the bridge crossing Sucker Creek, improve on-the- ground communication, and reduce brush at various sites. Takilma residents say they are in dire need of vol- unteers to train with IVFD in order to keep the doors open at Fire Station #6. There is currently only one resident volunteering. Also, much work needs to be done to reduce brush and create shaded fuel breaks. The last community to have a meeting was Sun Star. Although legally in California, it is most easily accessible by IVFD. Sun Star residents say they need more water tanks, fuel breaks and a “real” campground at Hogue’s Meadow including fire pits. Katelman said, “The real challenge is to create defensible space areas, but keep it in conjunction with riparian areas so that they aren’t damaged.” Katelman, with the help of her assistant, Praline McCormack, and IVFD, has prepared the Illinois Valley Fire Plan.
