Page 4 Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, December 8, 2004 Cougar girls basketball team looks like contender in Skyline contests RICCI COULTAS Coultas gets Belt Lodge top honor Illinois Valley High School senior Ricci Coultas has been honored as No- vember Student of the Month by Kerby Belt Ma- sonic Lodge. She is the daughter of Bill and Chris Coultas, of Cave Junction. Coultas is a member of Cougar Pals, and played on the volleyball and softball teams. She was captain of the volleyball team this year. She was twice voted Most Inspirational and Most Improved at softball, and selected as Skyline Confer- ence Second Team catcher. Coultas has earned her CIM Certificate and has maintained a 3.47 grade- point average. After graduation she will attend Queens Univer- sity in Charlotte, N.C., ma- joring in business manage- ment. She also will play on the school’s softball team. Conscience and reputa- tion are two things. Conscience is due to yourself, reputation to your neighbor. With four returning sen- iors and last year’s second- place finish, the Illinois Val- ley High School girls bas- ketball team looks like one of the favorites this season in the Skyline Conference. Featuring a pressure defense and motion offense, the Lady Cougars went 18-7 overall last year; 10-4 in the Skyline. Although the Cougars lost first-team conference star Kim Hamilton to graduation, they are return- ing with three players who finished in the top 10 in league scoring last year. Hamilton now attends Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. Entering his fifth season as head coach, Steven Mor- ton is optimistic about the team’s chances this year. “I expect this team to do well,” he said. “We’ve set our sights high for this sea- son, to not only make it to the state playoffs, but to win the Skyline Conference. Newcomer Ashley Ellis, a 5-4 junior, will add depth at guard, with 5-11 Jaime Wylie expected to do the same at post. The sophomore class is well-represented by one of the Skyline’s surprise play- ers of last year, Sheena Cole. The 5-9 Cole, who as a freshman last year earned third team all-conference honors, averaged 9.1 points per game. Another top newcomer is sophomore Leilani Tau- saga, a 5-6 guard. And 5-6 freshman prospect Raesha Yeoman should help round out this year’s varsity squad. “I’m real happy about the way girls basketball has grown in my five years here,” said Morton. “We’ve come from the league cellar to having championship expectations, and it’s great to have an assistant coach who teaches at IVHS and who knows the game.” He was referring to JV head coach Mark Hughes. “On top of this,” said Morton, “for the first time in 20 years we have enough girls coming out for basket- ball to field a second JV team.” Before ‘going over the hill,’ check Illinois Valley businesses for the gift, other product, groceries or services that you are looking for. However, it doesn’t lack in senior class leader- ship, provided by 5-9 return- ing starter Serena Barry; 5-3 guard Kristen Wood; and 5- 10 Sarah Houston. Barry, who averaged 9.3 points per game last sea- son, is a major threat from behind the 3-point arc. And Wood, who lettered last sea- son, brings a senior presence to the team that will need a determined offense to dis- rupt opponents. Houston, who also let- tered, gives inside height and defense to I.V., which more often than not is the smaller team to take the floor. A strong junior class is led by first-team Skyline point guard Emily Dudley. She averaged 9.9 points per game in conference last sea- son, and is considered one of the best ball handlers in the conference. She stepped up in a big way in last year’s playoff game vs. Lakeview. Also returning is junior Erika Riley, a 5-7 guard who started last year and was a conference honorable mention. Riley has been slowed by injuries early this IVHS hoop tourney Dec. 10-11 Two days of basketball action with four prep teams will be featured during the annual tournament sponsored by Illi- nois Valley High School. The event is set for Friday and Saturday, Dec. 10 and 11. Out-of-town high schools scheduled to participate are Glide, Gold Beach and Cascade Christian. The IVHS girls will face Glide at 6 p.m. Friday. The Cou- gar boys will compete against Glide the same day at 7:30 p.m. “There will be some exciting basketball, and we hope to see many of the community members there,” said IVHS. There is an admission fee. For more information phone 592-2116. Selmac water now drinkable The “Don’t Drink the Water” warning signs at Lake Selmac have been removed. Drinking water at the lake is now safe, said Jose- phine County Parks Dept. The lake and camp- grounds closed Aug. 19 because of a toxic algae, then reopened Aug. 5.
