Page 13 Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, November 10, 2004 Leif and Greta Reesen celebrating 65 years together She was 19; he was 23, and their Denmark home- land was afflicted by World War II. But being young and in love they wanted to marry, and did so. It was Nov. 12, 1939. Now wed 65 years, Cave Junction residents Leif and Greta L. Reesen, 84 and 88, will celebrate that achievement Friday, Nov. 12, 2004. They met in Odense, the hometown of Hans Christian Anderson, and were unable to leave Den- mark until after the war. Meanwhile, prior to and during the war period, Leif served nine years as “a cop” with the Denmark State Police. Eventually, under the sponsorship of her brother, they relocated to Northern Ontario, Canada, where they lived for five years. But, said the couple, they got tired of scanty food rations, and moved to Buffalo, N.Y. From there they moved to Seaside, Calif. around 1945. He worked in a sheet metal shop there. Later they relocated to Lakeport, Calif., where they owned and operated their own heating, air con- The happy couple in 1939 and 2004. ditioning and sheet metal business. They retired to Klamath Falls, Ore. in 1980 and spent 10 years there. “But we got tired of the snow,” said Greta, “and we moved to Cave Junction, where we’ve been for another 10 years. “And this is it; we’re not moving again.” During their 6 1/2 dec- ades of togetherness, they lived for six months in Guam, where he worked in Civil Service for the U.S. Navy, and they’ve traveled in Europe including Italy and France. He is a member of the Masons, and they enjoy watching hummingbirds feed on the porch at their home. In addition, they have a cat, “Bitty,” and a dog, “Tippy.” Their son, Mike, lives in Sacramento, but is in ill health and likely will be unable to visit them for the anniversary celebration. They are planning a trip to the coast to mark the day. Their daughter, Judy, died three years ago. The couple lives qui- etly. “We don’t do much any more,” said Greta. “We are simply here, and we’ve had a lot of years together.” “It’s been a nice life,” added Leif. “We have no complaints.” As to the typical query to long-married couples about how they have stayed happily together so long, Greta replies: “Because we believe in ‘for better or for worse,’ and that’s about it.” Her husband nodded agreement, and added, “That’s right; we just stick together.” 30 years experience in water, sewer & pipeline construction, brush clearing, septic installation & utility line trenching READY TO DIG & AIMING TO PLEASE 24 HOURS A DAY What To Do? Great Low Prices CJ checking on annexing ‘islands’ of county land in city By MICHELLE BINKER Staff Writer The possibility of an- nexing “islands” of county-governed private land within the city limits is being explored by the city of Cave Junction. Approximately 48 tax lots, comprising nearly 120 acres, have been identified for possible annexation. Mayor Ed Faircloth brought the issue forward during the Cave Junction City Council’s Monday night, Nov. 8 meeting in city hall. He believes that the properties ought to be brought into the city, “as they already benefit from their proximity to the city.” Bringing the parcels into the city also would facilitate street mainte- nance. Currently, where county and city parcels exist side-by-side and front on the same street, neither Josephine County nor the city wants to take responsi- bility for improving them, explained City Recorder Jim Polk. Faircloth allowed that possible repercussions fol- lowing Nov. 2 passage of Measure 37, which re- quires government entities to reimburse property own- ers when land-use deci- sions negatively affect property values, have yet IVHS volleyball Three Illinois Valley High School senior students played their last high school volleyball games Tuesday, Nov. 2. The Cougars were in Klamath Falls in the first- round of Skyline Conference playoff action. They lost to Mazama, after finishing the season with a 3-10 won-lost mark. Playing their last IVHS games were Serena Barry, Ricci Coultas and Jessa Fair- banks. Barry had 18 kills, five aces and three blocks. Coultas turned in 18 digs and 12 kills. Also for I.V., junior Erika Riley was good for 15 kills, 20 digs and six blocks. Sophomore Leilani Tausaga recorded 25 digs and 14 kills. In KFalls, the Cougars were up on Mazama 22-25, 20-25; but then Mazama, the Skyline’s fourth-place team, fought back to win 25-21, 25- 18, 17-15. to be understood. How- ever, he indicated that an- nexation likely would in- crease the potential value of land brought within city limits. The council was pro- vided a paper detailing the tax lots concerned, their acreage and current values. According to the docu- ment, the city would real- ize a net property tax in- crease of $5,150.84 with the additional taxable land. Councilman Rita Dyer recommended that the council set up workshops to further discuss the idea. Also during the meet- ing, the council considered requiring owners of seven city tax-lots, not currently connected to city water and sewer, to do so. Most of the properties are within 300 feet of an existing sewer line, it was explained. Portions of the munici- pal code were read to the council, stating that if re- quired by the city, a prop- erty owner has 90 days to 1-(541) 597-4486 1-(800) 297-0335 CCB#159580 make the connection and decommission existing septic systems, at his own expense. Councilman Dan Fiske commented that the cost would be “more than most people could come up with in 90 days.” The mayor said he be- lieves that the city proba- bly could offer some sort of payment plan to help owners comply. The council will dis- cuss the notion further on a future date. Rain or shine Saturday & Sunday Nov. 20 & 21, 10 to 2 in the dining room & storage unit at I.V.
