Mrs. Ward died in a motor vehicle accident near Grants Pass on Oct. 17; her son died the next day in a Portland hospital. Contributions and donations to aid the family, including the surviv- ing daughter, 9-year-old Makala Rae Ward, can be made at any Home Valley branch. PEACE TUNES - A free pre-election day after- noon concert of “Songs for World Peace & Democ- racy” will be presented by One Love Spirit Choir Sat- urday, Oct. 30. The performance will be in Immanuel United Methodist Church on Watkins Street, across from Shop Smart, beginning at 4. The program will feature songs by Betsey Jacobs and Libby Goines, Holly Near, Pat Humphries, Aletha Nowitzky, John Lennon, and special guest artist B. Wishes. In addi- tion, Goines will add her “musical magic” to a pro- gram to celebrate the “patriotism of peace, social jus- tice and civil liberty.” Additional accompaniment will be provided by Dorothea Hover-Kramer. High School Booster Club, there will be an open meeting Monday, Nov. 1 at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria. “No support; no more Booster Club,” states an announcement. GRAVE ISSUES - “Taking Control of Death Care Costs & Issues” is the title of a forum, sponsored by Lovejoy Hospice, that will be given on Monday, Nov. 8 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lovejoy’s location, 939 S.E. Eighth St. in Grants Pass. The subtitle of the free program is, “Conversations with Funeral Service Practitioners.” Attendees should bring a lunch; Lovejoy will provide beverages and dessert. LIVING AFTERGLOW - Lovejoy Hospice this year will conduct its 16th annual Light Up A Life celebrations in Cave Junction and Grants Pass. Read about Iraq, jobs, edu- cation, health care, nation- ally security and the envi- ronment. ‘Just passing through’ From Denny Hare Cave Junction This world is not my home; I’m just passing through, so I have a per- spective with a less emo- tional attachment to what is happening around me. When I read the letters to the editor, I like to read between the lines, as that is where the writers bare their souls and stand naked to the world. From the words and from between the lines all the emotions -- such as arrogance, self- righteousness, hostility, judgment, condemnation, compassion and a host of others -- come forth. I notice that labels in- cluding liberal, conserva- tive, Christian or even megalomanic are used ju- diciously to describe or demean others. Most of these labels are meaning- less, as they cover such a wide spectrum of people and attitudes. I suggest to future let- ter writers that before they start their next letter they read the obituaries and contemplate their purpose on this little speck spin- ning through the cosmos. We are here in the woods, and we really can- not see the forest for the trees. It is not them and us, it is only us. Our enemies are not the ones running around with guns and WMDs. The United States has more WMDs and the biggest sword in the world. It has invested more time and energy building and selling weapons than any other country. From my perspective, my enemies are the various demons that emanate from my own ego: arrogance, pride, self-pity, greet, lust and ignorance, to name a few. When I vanquish these enemies, only then will I be free. What we say and do builds our future. As we condemn, so will we be condemned. Same for judging and reaping. And if we live by the sword, we will die by the sword. Most letters to the edi- tor now are concerned with choosing people to lead us. We are given choices be- tween people who are al- most totally deaf, dumb and blind. Their minds are totally focused on the drama and the darkness over them. They claim to see the light, but they perceive it not. And so it is with the people seeking to be led. Our leader has told us that we can vanquish our enemies by the sword. In Mark 4:23 it reads, “How can Satan cast out Satan?” And if a kingdom is di- vided against itself, it can- not stand. We are a nation con- sumed with the worship of mammon six days a week, and God gets Saturday or Sunday. The god of mammon is worshipped in many major cities and Wall Street. It is worshipped in nearly every aspect of the American Dream. America is literally rotting from within. New corruption is ex- posed in the major media daily. Our leaders might be deemed members of K.I.S.S., Knights in Sa- tan’s Service. They claim that they can defeat terror and conquer evil. They cannot see that what they engage in com- bat is a mirror image of themselves. We all are hanging by a fragile thread between being in the body and being out of it. There is one man and one plan that can lead us to a place of peace and free- dom. It is written that, “Every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.” That is our destiny. It is up to us individually when we will arrive. As for me, I confess today that He is my Lord, and I know that He is my only hope. He is King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Scratch fires From Susan Gustafson Cave Junction Now that it’s the sea- son for burn piles, remem- ber that starting a fire from scratch will burn more cleanly and efficiently, with less smoke. There’s better air cir- culation without com- pacted, wet debris, and fires burn up, not down. Another reason to start a fire from scratch, adding to it from the debris pile, is that salamanders hide in wet debris. They are not fast enough to escape a torched debris pile.
