I came in all my life to help my mom in the class- room, so they knew me already. Mary Orton and Jann Taylor (Evergreen faculty) also were my teachers when I went to school here,” Becker said. “I already know the parents of many of the kids I teach too, so I know where they’re coming from,” she said. After graduating from Illinois Valley High School, Becker became a certified nursing aide in Medford for nearly nine years before going on to more college. "The very least you can do in your life is to figure out what you hope for. And the most you can do is live inside that hope. Not admire it from a dis- tance but live right in it, under its roof." - Barbara Kingsolver * * * She earned her first degree in bilingual educa- tion and continued college to earn her master’s degree in elementary education at Southern Oregon Univer- sity in Ashland. “As any good college student, I had no idea what I was going to do,” she said. “I knew I loved to travel and loved to speak Spanish. When I did my student teaching for my master’s degree, I taught in a dual language classroom. “I’m still trying to get my endorsement for Eng- lish as a Second Language (ESL). This will allow me to teach it. I went to school last summer, and have a few (credits) left to go. “They didn’t offer my class this fall, but I’m glad because I’ve been so busy. I’m hoping there will be a telecourse so I won’t have to travel, but I have to fin- ish this year before my grant runs out,” she said. Her plan is to be fin- ished by June 2005. “I think my students are awesome,” she said. “They make my day. And I know I would never have made it here without the support of my mom and my family. “I think I’m their suc- cess as well,” she con- cluded. Cougar sports report Varsity Football Hidden Valley Mus- tangs broke in the new Illi- nois Valley High School football field by stomping the Cougars 47-7. The game on Friday night, Oct. 1 marked the first night home game for the varsity Cougars in three years. With remodel- ing at Lorna Byrne Middle School, where I.V. played for many years, that field no longer existed, so the Cougars have played Sat- urday day games on a field adjacent to IVHS. The Oct. 1 Skyline Conference opener for the Cougars put I.V. (0-1) near the bottom of conference standings with Rogue River. Overall, I.V. has an 0-3 mark; RR 2-2. Hidden Valley is lead- ing 2-0 with North Valley in the Skyline. The Mustangs on Fri- day gained 14 first downs, while the Cougars had four. HV amassed 508 of- fensive yards, I.V. 174. Varsity Volleyball In Ken Mann Memo- rial Gym at IVHS, the vol- leyball team was defeated by North Valley on Tues- day, Sept. 28 in a Skyline Conference game.. Scores: 25-21, 25-19, 18-25, 25-14. I.V. was led by Ricci Coultas, who turned in 11 kills, four blocks and 18 digs. Leilani Tausaga con- tributed 13 kills, seven blocks and six digs. Also for the Cougs, Emily Dudley had eight aces, 13 kills, seven digs and five blocks; and 12 kills, eight blocks, seven aces and nine digs were added by Serena Barry. At Klamath Falls on Wednesday, Sept. 29, Ma- zama beat the Cougars in a conference game: 25-23, 25-19, 23-25, 17-25, 15-7. Barry was responsible for 16 kills, nine blocks and eight aces. Tausaga had 10 kills and 10 digs; Dudley had 15 kills, seven digs and seven aces; Erika Riley was good for eight aces, seven blocks, 10 kills and 10 digs. Coultas was not at the game, as she was compet- ing in a softball tourna- ment in Arizona. Boys Soccer A hat trick by Chris Chapman led Hidden Val- ley Mustangs to a 6-0 vic- tory against IVHS in Mur- phy on Thursday, Sept. 30. The loss put the Cou- gars at 1-5. In Cave Junction on Saturday, Oct. 2, the Cou- gars lost 3-0 to the North Valley Knights. I.V. (1-6) was to play Mazama on Tuesday, Oct. 5 in Klamath Falls.
