Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Tuesday, April 21, 2004 Page 7 ...Pastor Mark McLean, Fountain of Life Assembly of God Church Kerby Water District and I.V. Family Coalition gain USDA grant Eric Herst, from the Portland office of the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, presented checks to two Illinois Valley organizations. The grants were awarded during a meeting of the I.V. Community Response Team direc- tors in the Josephine County Bldg. in Cave Junction on Thursday night, April 15. John Plute (top photo), president of the Kerby Water District Board of Direc- tors, received a $15,000 check. It will be used for com- pletion of a preliminary engineering report and envi- ronmental assessment for the district’s planned water system. Kathleen Doyle (bottom photo), executive di- rector of I.V. Family Coalition, received a check for $36,750. The grant will be used to repair damage caused by vandalism and to repair and install a fire suppression system. In connection with the grant the coalition is providing $12,250 worth of material and labor. The organization serves 4,000 clients, and its facility on E. River Street accommodates 17 agencies. Are you a native? Yes. I was born and raised here. I graduated in 1977 from Illinois Valley High School. How long have you been a pastor here? Two years. What did you do before becoming a pastor? I cut timber for over 20 years. I worked on govern- ment ground here for 10 years. When things began to change here, I went south of Redding, Alturas; wher- ever I had to in order to keep busy; mostly here in Southern Oregon. What is it like being a pastor? Nearly everything about this job is new, especially working as a logger for so many years. I worked by my- self most of the time, sometimes with a few other guys; this is such a contrast to that. Not entirely new though, now that I’ve been doing it for two years. The most rewarding thing about this job would have to be when I can help someone to either realize the truth of God’s word or help them overcome a problem in their life that changes their life. My level of awareness and influence grows with more people I meet. I feel that if you are going to fill this position, you better be called by the Lord. I do everything here. I’m a handyman; in a little while, I will be pouring the con- crete for our new sign. A church is an organization where you have to oversee all the little things that need to be done to keep it going. What do you like best about living here? Definitely the beauty. It’s nice to have the familiar- ity of where I grew up and have worked. When you grow up in a small place like this, well; I’ve been to bigger cities, and it isn’t the same. Have you noticed much change during the years? Yes. The population, and the culture changes that comes with more people. This valley has always been full of good people; there’s no doubt about it; but it was smaller then. You got to know most of the people eas- ily. It’s not that way now, at least not the way it used to be, but it’s still home. Do you have family in the area? Yes. I married my wife, Theresa; she goes by Terry, 24 years ago this December. I have four kids -- my old- est, Micki, is 18; Lisa is 16; my son, Mark Jr. is 15; and my youngest daughter, Amy, is 9. My mom and dad (“Mick” and Eileen) live in Cave Junction. I also have aunts and uncles who live here. Any hobbies? I like to hunt and fish. I caught a 100-pound shark off Brookings, but big salmon are more fun to catch. What is your favorite ice cream? That’s tough because I like most all of them, even vanilla. I doubt there’s very many flavors that you could put in front of me that I would say “no” to. ~Interview and Photo by Shane Welsh OSU coast, satellite sensing funding raised by $519,414 Oregon State Univer- sity (OSU) at Corvallis will receive another $519,414 to further coastal and satellite remote sens- ing technology.
