Sanders Former Illinois Valley resident Venwal Romain Sanders, 93, of Medford, died Sunday, March 7, 2004 at the Northridge Center. A funeral service was held Saturday, March 20 at Laurel Cemetery in Cave Junction. Mr. Sanders, “Sy” to his friends, was born in Hutchinson, Kan. on June 21, 1910. As a young man, he moved to Grants, N.M., where he worked for the Santa Fe Railway Co. In 1933, in Gallup, N.M., he met and married his bride of more than 60 years, Laura Belle Robinson, who died in December 1994. They moved to Med- ford from Santa Paula, Calif. in 1994. During World War II, he worked in the shipyards in California and Oregon. Following the war, he re- turned to Illinois Valley to work in the woods and in sawmills; most notably at the Perry Pullen mill. He was also a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church. He is survived by his sons, Venwal V. Sanders of Palmdale, Calif., and Larry D. Sanders of Gardena, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. No service is planned for Cave Junction resident William Lester Parks, 81, who died at Three Rivers Community Hospital in Grants Pass on Tuesday, March 30, 2004. Mr. Parks was born on June 2, 1922 in Corona, Calif. He served for 13 years as a torpedo-man’s mate in the U.S. Navy. He was stationed in San Diego. He was married to the former Dorothy Jean Blight, who died before he did. He had a taxi stand in Corona, Calif., Mr. Parks later worked as a supervi- sor for 20 years for Alcan Aluminum in Riverside, Calif. His last employment was with the Rancho Santa Fe Water District in San Diego County, where he worked as a foreman for 20 years. He moved to Cave Junction in 1987 from Rancho Santa Fe. Mr. Parks enjoyed mining, fishing, camping, hunting and horses. He also enjoyed being with family, including grand- children. He was known for caring for his immedi- ate and extended family through his lifetime. Surviving are three daughters, Suzi Vischer of Altaville, Calif., and Geannie Parks-Friskey and Joanne DeBoer, both of Cave Junction; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A stepson, Warner Simmons, died on Dec. 23, 1998. Arrangements for Mr. Parks were handled by Hull & Hull Funeral Direc- tors, Grants Pass. I permit no man to narrow and degrade my soul by making me hate him. St. Patrick of the Forest Catholic Church The Lenten Season will officially close this week. We will launch into cele- bration of the Easter Season, continuing until Pentecost on May 30, after which we cele- brate Holy Thursday eve- ning’s Mass of the Lord’s Supper, venerate the cross and read the Passion and Cru- cifixion of Jesus on Good Friday. Easter Vigil Mass Satur- day night, April 10, will be- gin with a blessing of fire and lighting the Easter Candle. On Sunday, April 11, the Mass of the Resurrection of the Lord will be celebrated. Each Sunday throughout Easter, there will be special revelations of the risen Jesus in the Scripture readings, concluding with the Holy Spirit’s descent on Pentecost.
