Newspaper Page TextIllinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, January 28, 2004 In search of someone with whom to leave flyers on the business incubator, I ran into Thom LeGay in his new workshop. Thom is using the space to make his marimbas, urns and a number of new products he is experimenting with. Even though his workshop is crowded with a work- bench, raw materials, finished products and tools, he has been approached by three other people needing space for their own production. This visit and discussion with Thom gave me a new insight on how the planned incubator at I.V. Airport could be designed to better meet tenant needs. What I am consid- ering adding is a large space subdivided into work areas that could be rented as needed – either on a continuing ba- sis or simply from time to time as needed for a project. Besides the individual production space, there would be common rooms for specialized, dirty functions (gluing, painting, varnishing, etc.) and equipment available on a per-use fee. This arrangement would lower even further the entry level barrier to getting into business. Someone could start with even less investment or equipment, and as it suc- ceeded, move into larger, exclusive space. Other barriers that typically keep a business limited to a one-person operation are record-keeping and the hassles of becoming an employer. Record and bookkeeping would be available at the incubator, and I am investigating the feasibility of setting up a temp service that would make available trained people to the tenants without the need of – at least initially – their becoming an employer. I would desperately like to speak to more people who need production space and might be interested in becoming a tenant at the incubator in order to flesh out these ideas so that the incubator can be of maximum benefit. The transitional Business Development (previous) Programs and Projects (new) Committee met last week to discuss the Business Incubator Project under development. This was followed with a presentation to the full board during its monthly meeting. A second committee meeting will be held on Monday Feb. 2 at 5 p.m. in the county building in Cave Junction, and the board will vote to pro- ceed during a workshop on Thursday, Feb. 5 in the same location. Anyone involved in or thinking about craft pro- duction or light manufacturing can attend either meeting or contact the CRT office. Annual General Meeting (AGM) The annual general meeting is scheduled for March 30 in the I.V. High School Auditorium. The change in date has allowed the board to complete its reorganization plan- ning. The format for the meeting will be more interactive, with people stationed at different tables to explain and an- swer questions on various topics. There will be a reception and social time after the meeting. To prepare for the AGM, three community meetings will be held: Selma Community Building - Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 6 p.m.; Takilma Community Center/Dome School – Monday, Feb. 9 at 6 p.m.; Lorna Byrne Middle School – Wednesday, Feb. 11 at 6 p.m. These preliminary meetings will present for discussion the new CRT structure and committees, the proposed by- law changes to be submitted for member vote at the annual meeting, and coming activities needing community partici- pation. You will be able to renew or begin CRT member- ship, as well as nominate someone for the board at these meetings. Both general members and community nonmem- bers are invited to attend. Revolving Loan Fund Applications for the next round of the Revolving Loan Fund are due Friday, Feb. 6. Maximum loan amount is $10,000 for up to 10 years. The interest rate is a 5 percent per annum. The purpose of the loan fund is to assist start- up businesses to get under way or for existing businesses to expand. The application is simple, and assistance is available from the CRT office to flesh out your business idea.
