It seems that through- out history, white male politicians have been doing everything they can possi- bly think of to deny the vote to anyone but rich, white men. Ei gh t e e n - ye a r - o l d s were given the right to vote because they were fighting and dying for our country in wars. Since they were serv- ing their country, they were rewarded with the ballot. Seventeen-year-olds can now join the military but they still can’t vote. Even 16-year-olds can think for ourselves. I can, just ask my dad. Things could certainly not get worse in this country if 16- year-olds were allowed to vote. We’re mired in an ille- gal war because of lies about weapons of mass destruction. And now to clinch it all, we’ve got a jingoistic bodybuilder for governor. If given the chance, 16-year-olds could prove that we’re capable of mak- ing ballot decisions at least as sound as these. Something must be done about this. Start speaking up and may the teen-agers prevail. The Gospel read- ing will be from John, Chapter 2, which tells the story of Jesus in a temple in Jerusalem. He drove the people out, spilled the coins of the moneychang- ers, and overturned their tables. He also said, “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.” He was speaking about the temple of His body which would be raised from the dead three days after His death. The disci- ples came to believe the Scripture and the word Jesus had spoken -- a sign for them and a sign for us.
