Parents of players are encouraged to attend. SEE SPAWN - Saturday, Oct. 18 from 1 to 5 p.m. will offer a chance to see Chinook salmon spawning in the Applegate River. Ecologist Rich Nawa will lead stream-side hikes and discuss the life cycle and habitat needs of salmon. The Siskiyou Pro- ject-sponsored event is free. Participants are to bring hiking boots, rain gear, Polaroid glasses, water and snacks. The tour is wheelchair accessible. (Photo by Steve Fairchild) CJ ‘Art Mom’ recognized as volunteer of the year Rebecca Pearson The Board of Directors of the Arts Council of Southern Oregon an- nounced that it has se- lected: Rebecca Pearson of Cave Junction, KOBI-TV, Art in Bloom, and the Southern Oregon Histori- cal Society as recipients of the Arts and Culture Awards for 2003. Pearson, known as the “Art Mom” of Cave Junc- tion has been named Arts and Culture Volunteer for 2003. In the more than three years she has owned and operated BEBE’s Art for Everyone, she has dem- onstrated the power of grass-roots community organizing in support of the arts and culture, ac- cording to a spokesman from the board. To help develop cul- tural tourism for her com- munity, Pearson helped start the Cave Junction Second Friday Art Walk, which she has continued to organize for three seasons. She is president-elect of the Illinois River Valley Arts Council and has been an active volunteer in its diverse activities, includ- ing a holiday fund-raiser in 2002 and construction of a large fish puppet for the I.V. Lions Club Labor Day Parade. Notified of this award, she said, “My success in organizing the arts com- munity in the valley is only possible because of our many talented artists and the dedication of our won- derful ‘art slaves.’” This year’s recipients will be honored at the Arts and Culture Awards Din- ner and Dance on Saturday evening, Nov. 15 at the Rogue Valley Country Club in Medford.
