Page 2 Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, October 8, 2003 My beloved wife was reading in bed the other night and laughing out loud. “Hey,” said I, “it’s great that you’re rereading some of my old columns. Pretty funny stuff, huh!?” Jan stopped chuckling and guffawing; wiped the laugh tears from her eyes and notified me that no, she was not rereading “Blob’s Corner.” Instead (gulp) she was reading one of the books written by Patrick F. McManus. I have to admit, he is a humorous guy. Probably makes a bundle with his goofy stories, too. Me? I’m happy as long as no one smacks me on the head with a rolled-up copy of the “Noose” and shouts, “You stink!” After Jan nearly rolled off the bed laughing at the McManus concoctions, she urged me to read the story she had just finished. It related the intriguing tale of how fishermen handle getting hooked by their fellow anglers, and the pains, so to speak, that are taken to remove such airborne barbed gifts. So I read the story. Yeah, I got a couple of chuck- les out of it, but it really didn’t strike me as all that amusing. Jan was surprised, but not too much. “You’re not a fisherman,” she said, which is some- thing I already knew. However, as a child she was taken fishing and so could visualize the jolly time en- joyed by fishermen getting hooked, and what their brain-dead buddies do to get the dang things out of their bodies. Anyway, it was a bit tough for the ol’ editor to realize that McManus writes like a champ, able to hit the funny bone in a single bound. El Jefe has to strug- gle just to get a giggle, and even then I’m not sure it’s just a courtesy laugh. Man, I’ll tell you, Humble Pie is not my dish, as I prefer low-fat peach or apple with non-fat frozen va- nilla yogurt. But maybe if I keep trying I can tickle someone’s laugh button. Either that or learn how to enjoy Humble Pie. With or without vanilla yogurt. And definitely with- out a fish hook in one ear or the other. Or some other bodily appendage. As a newcomer to this area at the time of the Daisy Hill Fire, I was shocked to hear so many firecrackers -- all poten- tials for another fire disas- ter. The public interest is definitely not served by the release of unsupervised, private fireworks in an area with such high forest fire danger. In addition, firecrack- ers pose a serious threat to health of inexperienced persons and children. As a nurse I have seen devastat- ing burns and injuries from these explosives. I encourage all who value the beauty of this valley to support the pro- posal to limit fireworks to supervised activities by professionals. I appreciate your reporting of this con- cern. I for one look for- ward to celebrating July 4 in other, less dangerous, ways -- independence means the right to choose what is wise and best for all. ‘KBCC support’ From Pastor Charles Bridges, Bridgeview Community Church Cave Junction We appreciate every- one for their gracious sup- port regarding the equip- ment needed for EAS (Emergency Alert System). Friends of the Library puts on a book sale, which is organized by a few core members of our group. These same folks move thousands of the books and put in many hours of work to make the sale happen. This year I was hap- pily surprised when many new volunteers helped to unload and organize books, baked treats and cashiered. This year’s sale was better than those in the past four years that I have been involved. I say it was bet- ter, not in terms of how much money was made (which was also great), but in terms of how many more community members came together to make it happen. We had a wonderful turnout for the Friday eve- ning members’ presale and steady traffic throughout the day on Saturday. Those who chose to use their time and energy to make it a success are appreciated. It is a good day when the community members of the valley can come together, work hard, and enrich our own and our neighbors’ lives. If you would like to become more involved in the I.V. Friends of the Li- brary, come to our next meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 14 from 3 p.m. at the I.V. Branch Library, 209 W.
