‘Val’ Rodriguez
A Requiem Mass was
to be celebrated for Valen-
tina “Val” Rodriguez, 92,
who died on Thursday,
Aug. 14, 2003 in an as-
sisted-living facility in
Oceanside, Calif.
The Mass was to be
celebrated on Wednesday,
Aug. 20 by the Rev. Tony
Gonzalez, a family friend,
from Los Angeles. Mrs.
Rodriguez will be cre-
mated and the remains will
be interred at Holy Cross
Cemetery in San Diego.
Survivors include two
sons, Robert R. “Bob”
Rodriguez of Cave Junc-
tion, and Stephen R. Rod-
riguez of Corpus Christi,
Texas. Her husband, Jose
Armando Rodriguez, died
in February 2002 at the age
of 88.
James R. Bitney
James R. Bitney, 76,
of Cave Junction died on
Sunday, July 20, 2003 at
his home. Cremation and a
private service followed.
Mr. Bitney was born
on Dec. 15, 1926 in Na-
tional City, Calif. He
joined the Merchant Ma-
rines after high school in
1942.
After serving his coun-
try, he worked for the Ford
agency in Burbank, Calif.
until he was recalled into
active services with the Air
Force until 1956.
For the next 19 years
he was very active in the
motion film business at the
Pathe Studios in Holly-
wood, Calif.
In 1975, he accepted a
job of ranch manager at
Deer Creek Ranch in
Selma.
He had never been, or
worked, on a ranch before,
but with the help of
neighbors Paul and Bill
Pfohl and family at Q Bar
Ranch, Joe and his father
Sam Wilson, Carl Alleman
and lots of book reading,
he said he finally got the
“hang” of ranching.

yegwara for coming to
Cave Junction to celebrate
Mass on Aug. 10. During
this Mass he baptized Elli-
ott Michael John Harris,
the first Sacrament of Bap-
tism he performed since
coming to Saint Anne’s on
July 1.
Another recent cele-
bration was the Feast of
the Assumption on Friday,
Aug. 15 when we honored
Mary, the mother of Jesus,
who was assumed into
heaven by her Son. Next
on our liturgy agenda will
be the 21st Sunday in Or-
dinary Time when we will
continue our focus on
John’s Gospel, Chapter 6.

After the ranch was
sold, Jim moved to Cave
Junction.
He enjoyed the out-
doors, old cars, racing,
trains and almost anything
that was historical or edu-
cational.
In addition to his wife,
Flo, survivors include a
daughter, Jan Bitney of
Burbank, Calif.; step-
daughter Vicky Morrison
of Grants Pass; and a
grandson.

54, of Selma, died on
Monday, Aug. 18, at his
home. Arrangements are
pending at Clausen’s Illi-
nois Valley Funeral Home.

vices, and earned a certifi-
cate of middle/secondary
education from the Univer-
sity of Oregon. Summer
commencement exercises
were held on Saturday,
Aug. 16 in Eugene.

of science in geography
and Patrice Tucker of Cave

Three Illinois Valley
residents earned a spot on
the Dean’s List during the
winter term at the Univer-
sity of Oregon.
To qualify for the lists
students had to complete
12 units with a grade point
average of 3.75 or better
on a 4.0 grading scale.
Cave Junction resi-
dents’ Hsin I. Lee, a
sophomore pre-computer
and information science
major and Lark Song Sulli-
van, a junior Spanish ma-
jor, were each named to
the Dean’s List.
And O’Brien student
Jason Robert Nelson-
Elting, a sophomore exer-
cise and movement science
major also made the list.
Adam M. Haviland
U.S. Air Force Airman
Adam M. Haviland has
graduated from basic mili-
tary training at Lackland
Air Force Base, San Anto-
nio, Texas.
During the six weeks
of training, Haviland stud-
ied the Air Force mission,
organization, and military
customs and courtesies;
performed drill and cere-
mony marches, and re-
ceived physical training,
rifle marksmanship, field
training exercises and spe-
cial training in human rela-
tions.
In addition, airmen
who complete basic train-
ing earn credits toward an
associate degree through
the Community College of
the Air Force.
Haviland is the grand-
son of Don and Vera
Haviland of Cave Junction.
He is a graduate of Illinois
Valley High School.
