Page 6 Arvil Leonard ‘Blackie’ Miller Arvil Leonard ‘Blackie’ Miller, 70, of Cave Junction, died on Thursday, May 29, 2003 in a hospital in Sacra- mento, Calif. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 28 at 1 p.m. in the former Selma Elementary School auditorium with Pastor Phil Anderson officiating. Mr. Miller was born on June 17, 1932 in Northern Saskatchawan, Canada. He began working at 10 years old on farms in Missouri, where he was raised. He served as a senior clerk in the U.S. Air Force for four years. He retired from California State University in Sacramento after 26 years, where he worked as a biology technician. He also worked as a piano technician for several years, sold shoes for Thom McKann and delivered candy throughout Sacramento. When his first wife and the mother of his sons became ill from Lupus, Miller learned hemodialysis, and personally dialyzed her for one year. He enjoyed playing the piano and keyboard for friends in his natural “play by ear” style, and played at the Black- berry Festival and other events in Cave Junction. He belonged to the American Legion Post 70 in Cave Junction and was a lifetime member of the Dis- abled American Veterans. Survivors include his wife, Sandra Miller of Cave Junction; three sons, John Miller of Wahougal, Wash., Jim Miller of Vacaville, Calif. and Arvil Leonard ‘Lenny’ Miller of Sacramento, Calif.; as well as seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. James David Rupert Former Cave Junction resident James David Rupert, 73, of Woodburn, died on May 28, 2003. No service is planned at this time. Mr. Rupert was born on January 31, 1930 in Welch, Okla. He married Rosemarie Schuster in 1961. He was president of Home Valley Bank in Cave Junction and a member of Illinois Val- ley Golf Course. He was president and CEO of Great Western Bank in Dallas, Ore. He retired in 1995 after more than 40 years in banking. He was a U.S. Navy Korean War veteran and a member of Al RCC’s Burkey retires, cites PERS as cause Kathy Burkey, dean of Student Services at Rogue Community College, retired June 1 due to concerns over the state’s Public Employees Retirement System (PERS). Burkey said she arrived at the decision “only after much soul searching, spreadsheet analysis and consultation.” She has requested the RCC Board authorize an addi- tional year’s contract so that she can continue working on the college redesign project. Burkey, who is only the second dean of Student Ser- vices in RCC’s history, joined RCC in 1980 as a counselor. In May 2000 she was pro- moted from director of Coun- seling and Student Programs to succeed the retiring Dr. Tenison Haley. In addition to his wife, Rosemarie Rupert, survivors include daughter Ramona Modrich; and one grand- daughter. David Wayne Prior David Wayne Prior, 43, of Cave Junction, died on Friday, June 6, 2003 at his residence. A graveside service will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 14, at the Ogburn- Inwood Cemetery in Shingle- town, Calif. Anderson Funeral Home in Anderson, Calif. is in charge of arrangements. A memorial service, handled through the Illinois Valley Funeral Home, will be held at Illinois Valley “Forks” State Park in Cave Junction (time and date were unavailable at press time.) Mr. Prior was born on Nov. 18, 1959 in Gardena, Calif. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving from 1977 to 1980. He is survived by his wife, Janet Prior, of Cave Junction; father, Verne W. Prior, of Cave Junction; and mother, Dorothy Allen of Ber- lington, Kent.; a son, David Prior Jr. of Cave Junction; a stepson, Josh Sartain of Shasta Lake City, Calif.; a daughter Amber Pingatore Prior, of Anderson, Calif.; a brother, Norman V. Prior, of Sacra- mento, Calif.; and a sister, Kathy Gooden, of Shingle- town, Calif. The second reading will be from Paul’s letter to the Romans where Paul tells them that those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. He tells them they re- ceived a Spirit of adoption through whom they cry “Abba Father!,” and that if they are children of God, they are joint heirs with Christ. Three per- sons, Father, Son (Christ) and Holy Spirit are mentioned here, and honored on this spe- cial day. Please don’t litter! Greg Crowl IVHS grad. Crowl given scholarship 3.78 GPA and was ranked fifth in his class. He has many interests and is involved in several activi- ties including: FFA, varsity soccer, Fishwatch, Mathletes, outdoor club and basketball. He was this year’s National Honor Society President, and has held the following offices: FFA Vice President, Fresh- man Class Vice President, and Sophomore Class Representa- tive. Crowl has also received many awards, including: IVHS Principal’s Student of the Month, October 2002; three Skyline Conference Ath- lete Awards; Skyline Confer- ence Honorable Mention for soccer (twice); Star Green- house Award, placing third in soil judging; Gatorade Will to Win Athlete Award; Green- house Management Award; Mr. Hustle in Basketball Award; Tractor Safety Award, and Sophomore Public Speak- ing Award. He has participated in the Illinois Valley Riparian Tree Planting Program for eight years. IVSWCD has been award- ing scholarships to area youth for more than 20 years and continues to look for financial assistance to support these scholarships. Crowl. Crowl graduated from IVHS on Wednesday, June 4 and will be attending the Uni- versity of Oregon (U of O), Eugene in the fall.
