Page 5 Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR Wednesday, May 21, 2003 Janice Irene Miles Janis Irene Miles, 77, of Cave Junction, died on Satur- day, May 10, 2003 at her home. A graveside service was held on Saturday, May 17 at Laurel Cemetery. Miles was born on March 23, 1926 in Jackson, Mich. As a child, she moved to Santa Monica, Calif., and graduated from Santa Monica High School. In the early 1960s, she worked as a secre- tary at the Naval Ordinance Test Center. In the 1970s she was co-owner and operator of a real estate office in Westlake Village, Calif. She retired to Cave Junction in 1984. She served as president of the Illinois Valley Women’s Golf Association. She enjoyed the ocean, traveling and the good things in life. She is survived by her companion of 18 years, Ray- mond Buckley of Cave Junc- tion; a son, Miles Defenbach of O’Brien; daughters Linda Defenbach of Cave Junction and April Hefner of Grants Pass; and three grandchildren. Martin S. Paige Martin S. Paige, 77, of Cave Junction, died on Tues- day, May 13, 2003 at Three Rivers Community Hospital in Grants Pass. No services are planned. Southern Oregon Cremation Services is in charge of ar- rangements. It is the family’s wish that memorial donations be made to a charity of one’s choice. Mr. Paige was born on March 8, 1926 in New York City, N.Y. On April 24, 1995 in New York City, he married his wife Driade, who survives. He worked as a mechanic on the East Coast. They moved to Cave Junction from Southern California 20 years ago. He worked as an electri- cal supervisor and owned and operated MP Electric in Cave Junction and did work for K Box Mill Industrial and many others. He was a member of the NRA and Lions Club of Cave Junction. Paige enjoyed pho- tography, hunting fishing and mechanics. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Taryn Gibbs and son, Leandro Paige, both of Cave Junction; and one grandson. David “Lee” Chaffee David “Lee” Chaffee, 71, of Grants Pass, died on Satur- day, May 17, 2003, at High- land House Nursing and Reha- bilitation Center. Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 22, at Hull and Hull Chapel. A memorial ser- vice will begin at 11 a.m. with Bonny Jueden as celebrant. Private interment will be at Eagle Point National Ceme- tery. Hull & Hull Funeral Di- rectors is in charge of arrange- ments. It is the family’s wish that donations be made to Lovejoy Hospice, 939 SE 8th St., Grants Pass, OR, 97526. Mr. Chaffee was born on April 8, 1932 in Ontario, Calif. On Oct. 5, 1952 in Riv- erside, Calif. he married the former Yvonne Binger, who survives. He was a Korean War veteran. He served in the U.S. Army as a sergeant with the 224th Infantry Division, Medical Company-motor pool. His medals include the Army Occupation Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with Bronze Star and Combat Medal Badge. In 1971, the couple moved to Cave Junc- tion and then recently moved to Grants Pass. He enjoyed fishing in Alaska and being with his family. In addition to his wife, survivors include his children, Debi Rathbone, Randy Chaf- fee, David Chaffee, Karen Hatch, Tim Chaffee, Cathy Hughes; his mother, Ruth Chaffee; sisters, Betty Jean Heaton and Joan Hand; broth- ers, Floyd Chaffee, Bill Chaf- fee, Ted Chaffee and Rodney Chaffee; 11 grandchildren and three great granddaughters. A bake auction benefiting the academy was held following the service. Funds for the completion of the “Upper Room” were donated by the Thayers as a tribute to Mrs. Meengs. Spring cleaning will be- held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 24. Leftovers will be donated to the “La Casa” yard sale. Good Shepherd Lutheran Church activities include: Wednesday, May 21, 1 p.m. Lutheran women of the Illi- nois Valley; Sunday, May 28, 9 a.m., worship; 10:15 a.m., Sunday school.
