Lund. SPRING CLEANING -- IVCRT’s annual Down by the Riverside Spring Cleanup will be held on Saturday, May 17. Volunteers are to meet at Forks State Park at 9 a.m. and will carpool to three area campgrounds to paint and repair dam- age from vandalism. Volunteers are to bring their own tools. There will be a potluck at Forks park at 1 p.m. Participants are to bring their own table service and a dish to share. Hot dogs and drinks will be provided. Phone 597-2470 for info. ROSE GARDEN -- Illinois Valley High School is look- ing for donated roses to be used on arches during graduation on June 4. Lions Club members will be selling raffle tickets for a 2003 Harley-Davidson An- niversary Model motorcycle during the Culpepper & Merri- weather Circus on Thursday, May 15. The raffle, to be held at the I.V. Family Resource Center, is an annual fund-raiser for the Lions Club. GREAT GRASSES -- The Native Plant Society of Ore- gon will sponsor a free workshop and hike on wild land grasses on Sunday, May 18. Don Heinze will help partici- pants learn to identify common grasses of Southwest Ore- gon and understand their natural history. Hikers are to bring a pencil, paper, clipboard, hand lens and digging tool and meet at 9 a.m. in the east side of the Fred Meyer parking lot in Grants Pass. FREE WHEELIN’ -- Illinois Valley Lions Club is seeking parties interested in participating in a possible “Tuff Truck” or “Mud Bog” competition for its Labor Day festi- val. APPLAUSE PAUSE -- Grants Pass Dept. of Public Safety will honor area police officers, firefighters and sup- port personnel for their efforts during rescue and fire sup- pression efforts on March 6 at the major Grants Pass fire involving two assisted-living facilities. There will be an awards and medal ceremony on Wednesday, May 21 at 7 p.m. in GP City Hall. ‘A’ FOR EFFORT -- A reception at Rogue Community College’s Wiseman Gallery, 3345 Redwood Hwy., will be held on Thursday, May 22 at 4 p.m. to celebrate artwork created by students during the year. Their varied media pro- jects will be on exhibit from Monday, May 19 until Wednesday, June 11. Redwood Hwy...More than 100 Josephine County residents will par- ticipate in the 2nd Annual Mental Health Awareness Walk- A-Thon and Information Fair on Saturday, May 17 (May is Mental Health Awareness Month) at Riverside Park in Grants Pass. Pledge money will aid county citizens who have a mental illness and are suddenly finding themselves without prescription coverage. (Continued from page 2) There is no indication whatsoever that they care at all for the valley. Also, Brock stated that their salaries were only $86,321 annually. When I contacted the commissioners office on this, it was pointed out that they forgot to mention their $8,000 health insurance! I have attended meetings with both Brock and Jim Rid- dle. During an hour of talking about the county and the budget, I did not get one true, direct answer as to where is the money. I am in total favor of the new charter. It will finally give us in the valley represen- tation, plus those in the other three districts in Josephine County. We will be able to nominate and vote for our commissioners. Then we will be able to vote on the other three “floaters.” I do not agree that every- one in Josephine County can vote for all seven commission- ers, I feel that if we are going to get fair representation, we should be the only ones who vote for our district. Grants Pass, Wolf Creek, Williams and the other cities outside our district do not know what we need and who should repre- sent us. Likewise, we have no knowledge of the needs of the other districts. The statement I heard that seven commissioners would be too confusing...what do we have now? Two against one and the one there the longest calling all the shots. I have the information and the petition. I would like the people in the valley to contact me and help us get this peti- tion on the November ballot. Regarding the statement from Brock that the current commissioners will resign — my response to that is, “Yippee.” We could use that money for the valley. JoCo seeks volunteers for UAPC The Josephine County Board of Commissioners is accepting applications from volunteers to fill a vacancy on the Urban Area Planning Commission. The commission reviews and makes recommendations regarding zone changes, com- prehensive plan map amend- ments and site-specific changes. The Urban Area Planning Commission is made up of eight members — four ap- pointed by city council and four by the Josephine County Board of Commissioners (All members shall reside or own property within the UBG). Members shall fulfill a four- year term. The deadline for accepting applications to the board is Saturday, May 31. Interviews may be held. Applications are available in the commissioners office, Room 154, Josephine County Courthouse, Grants Pass. The board is also accepting appli- cations from volunteers to fill a vacancy on the City/County Bikeways Committee. The application deadline is also on May 31. The board may interview applicants. Illinois Valley Golf Association The Illinois Valley Golf Association Board meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 20 at 6 p.m. The meeting will be held at the golf course clubhouse. Waldo Mining District The Waldo Mining Dis- trict will hold a meeting on Wednesday, May 28 at 7 p.m. in the Josephine County Bldg. in Downtown Cave Junction. The public is invited. Items on the agenda in- clude the lawsuit filed Feb. 6, in U.S. District Court, by the Siskiyou Project against the Siskiyou National Forest Su- pervisor. The lawsuit requires Plans of Operation for all mining activities (including gold pan- ning, sluicing, and dredging) near any water. Other current mining issues will also be dis- cussed.
