Page 8 Illinois Valley News, Cave Junction, OR. February 12, 2003 I.V. Board .. (Continued from page 1) work the board started in 1949. “There are several organi- zations that qualify,” Lopez said. Lopez said that the board will hopefully have a decision within a couple of months. But he noted that there isn’t a timeline because members want to find a replacement with the same ideals as those now on the board. While the IVMC Board of Directors will basically dis- band, Lopez said that any board member who wants to help the new landlords may do so. “I know I will,” he said. A drop box for the survey is located at the senior center, or it can be returned by mail to IVMC at P.O. Box 669, Cave Junction, OR 97523. Angel abducted; Coffee Heaven offers reward By BRITT FAIRCHILD Staff Writer Coffee Heaven owners Kenny and Marilyn Houck are offering a $500 reward for information about who may have vandalized and stolen an angel sculpture from the roof of their business. The crime most likely oc- curred between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 9, said Kenny Houck, explaining the sculpture was still there when a friend drove by the Red- wood Highway business at approximately 12:45 a.m. that morning. But it was gone by the time an employee arrived at the shop sometime before 6 a.m., he added. “It’s that usual feeling of being violated,” Houck said the following, day, still disbe- lieving the motive behind such a disrespectful act. Physical signs, such as broken pieces of wings on the ground, skid marks on the as- phalt, and cable marks on the roof led the Houcks to suspect that a cable hooked to a vehi- cle was used to pull the more than 200-pound, life-size an- gel from its perch. Houck also said that the metal platform that the angel was attached to had snapped at the weld -- another piece of physical evidence showing the sculpture was yanked down instead of lifted by someone on the roof. The Josephine County Sheriff’s Office is investigat- ing the incident. Some tips have come in as to who the perpetrators might be, Houck said. Deputy Emory Souza ex- amined the scene at around 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 9. Installed in August 2000, the wood angel carving by area artist Dudley Douglas, has become an admired and appreciated work of local art, Houck said. Already, he said, people are wanting to donate money to refurbish the statue if it is found, or replace it with a new one. To report any information about the incident, phone the Houcks at Coffee Heaven at 592-3888. Scratching surface of Miller’s art The Illinois Valley Fine Artists, Inc’s. February 2003 Featured Artist is Cassandra Newton-Miller of Cave Junc- tion, a member of the organi- zation since 1990. Cassandra, known to friends as “Sandy,” her son, KC, and husband, Blackie, came to the valley in 1989 after traveling for four years around the U.S. They began their travels after care-taking an experi- mental gold mine in the Sierra Mountains near Foresthill, Calif., where the owners were testing some new gold- extracting equipment. When the owners aban- doned the mine site due to weather, the Millers headed out to see the country. Their son, then 10, had been regis- tered for home schooling with a Foresthill school, so they continued to home school him until their arrival in Cave Junction. Travels then ensued for the four years moving all around the country from Cali- fornia to Maine, first in an old truck, then a Volkswagen camper and finally a motor home. “The travels were fun, educational for my son, and a dream realized for Blackie and me. We still love to travel.” Miller said. Prior to traveling, Miller participated in many art exhi- bitions in Reno and Sacra- mento, and worked as a graphic artist, layout artist- copy camera tech, and art di- rector for various companies. In 1965, she began teach- ing at the YMCA in Yuba City, Calif., where she lived for 20 years. HAVE A HEART HEALTHY VALENTINE’S DAY CABIN CHEMISTRY 337 S. REDWOOD HWY.
