Lund will be held on Saturday, Feb. 1, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the IVHS cafeteria. The public is invited and is encouraged to bring their favorite dish. AIRPORT ADVISORY - The Illinois Valley Airport Advisory Board will be holding an airport planning work- shop on Monday, Feb. 3 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the county building in downtown Cave Junction. Josephine County Commissioners, representatives from FAA and ODA have been invited. The workshop is also open to the public. SCRAPBOOK SAVERS - Rogue Community College Community Education will offer a class on how to preserve family photographs and other memories in an album but not spend a lot of money. “Pennies per Page Scrapbooking,” will be held on Wednesdays beginning Jan. 29 through Feb. 19 at the RCC Belt Bldg. in Kerby. Illinois Valley resident Elizabeth Davis will teach the class. To register, or for more information, phone 592-2120. SAR CELEBRATION - Josephine County Sheriff’s Patrol Search and Rescue will host an open house and mem- bership drive on Wednesday, Jan. 29 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Search and Rescue headquarters, 1202 Redwood Ave., Grants Pass. Volunteers will be on hand to answer questions about the all-volunteer organization and take membership applications. SCHC 30 YEARS - Siskiyou Community Health Cen- ter begins a year-long celebration “Thirty years of helping people,” Friday, Feb. 7. There will be a potluck dinner at the Takilma Community Center starting at 6 p.m. Photographs taken by Dr. Jim Shames (co-founder of the clinic) that span SCHC’s thirty years will be exhibited at the dinner. Guests are encouraged to bring photos and clippings for the “Time Line” collage and acoustic instruments for impromptu musi- cal performances. COFFEE TALK - The Illinois Valley Chamber of Commerce will hold a “get acquainted coffee” on Friday, Jan. 31 from 8 to 10 a.m. at the chamber office in the I.V. Visitor Center. Refreshments will be served. CHINESE NEW YEAR - A Chinese New Year cele- bration, to benefit The Shining Stars, a not-for-profit organi- zation benefiting Illinois Valley youth, will be held on Sat- urday, Feb. 1. Dinner will be served from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Music will begin at 8:30. There will be dinner, gourmet des- serts, a bar and dancing. Two live bands, “Jupiter Hollow” from Eugene, and “Brothers of Max Catharsis,” from Seat- tle, will play. For more information phone 592-5460. OMSI TIME - OMSI (Portland-based Oregon Museum of Science & Industry) will conduct science classes at Dome School on Saturday, Feb. 8. The classes are for those in kin- dergarten through eighth-grade. Enrollment is limited. Phone 592-3911 for more information. BRINGING UP BABY - During January and February, Living Alternatives is conducting a Baby Bottle Campaign to raise funds. Bottles are available at the office, between Klamath First Bank and Carlos’ Restaurante, and from some valley churches. People are being asked to take bottles home or to their workplace, and fill them with money or checks. The deadline to return the bottles is Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14. Funds will be used to support continual pregnancy test- ing, and the pregnancy and parenting support programs of Living Alternatives. Services are provided free to anyone, but financial help is needed. CHANCE MEETING - Jim and Kathy Lombardo’s son, Vince Lombardo, lives in Burbank, Calif. and sub- scribes to the “Illinois Valley News.” Last week, he not only received his own copy of the paper, but a copy addressed to Jim Lord, son of Jim Lord of O’Brien, who also lives in Burbank. Taking his mom’s advice, Vince looked on a map to see how close he was to the younger Jim. As it turned out, Vince realized he lived less than one-half mile from Jim, and he hand-delivered Jim’s paper to him. REP NOTE - Third District State Rep. R&R ESOP - Rough & Ready employees have raised approximately $1,000 of the $6,250 needed to begin the ini- tial feasibility study to see if keeping Rough & Ready open is an option. The Illinois Valley Cougar Booster Club will hold its next meeting on Monday, Feb. 3 at 6 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. The Josephine County Marine Pa- trol will offer boat exams at no charge on Saturday, Feb. 1 at the Rogue River Boat shop, 1815 SW Bridge St., in Grants Pass. The exams will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Participants are to bring the necessary paperwork and appro- priate boating equipment. For more information, phone the county marine patrol at 471-2114. TREE TRIMMING - Concerned citizens Kathy Lombardo and Sonny Ness guided a crew of City of C.J. employees in tree trimming along Redwood Hwy. in downtown Cave Junction on Tuesday, Jan. 7. C.J. city council considered removing trees for better visibility. Lombardo and Ness helped provide an alternative to tree removal. (Photos by Kathy Lombardo) Laurette Beta Beta Laurette Beta Beta, the local chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, spent the first meeting of December in Grants Pass alalong with the sister chap- ters of Josephine County, where we held our annual Christmas get-together and fund-raiser “Rudolph’s Rum- ble.” Food items were donated and raffles were held to bene- fit those in need during the Christmas season. Virginia Gilliam hosted the Christmas party with great food and good fun. Secret sis- ters were revealed and new ones chosen for the upcoming year. The first meeting for the new year was held at the home of Kathy Young. Plans were discussed for a Valentine’s Day celebration along with usual business. Kathy pre- sented a program on the en- dangered Darlingtonia plant. Jean McHie was the host- ess at the home of Virginia Gilliam for the second January meeting. After the business meeting, the birthdays of Deon Jenkins, Jean McHie and Cindy (Sam) Newton were celebrated. Waldo Mining District The Waldo Mining Dis- trict (WMD) will hold its first meeting of 2003 on Wednes- day, Jan. 29, at the Josephine County Building in downtown Cave Junction. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. The public is invited. Items on the agenda in- clude the recent expiration of the period of segregation on approximately 33,000 acres of Bureau of Land Management lands connected with the pro- posed mineral withdrawal of January 22, 2001, and the con- tinuation of the illegally pro- posed mineral withdrawal and illegal segregation on approxi- mately 83,000 acres of the Siskiyou National Forest. The WMD, established in 1852, is Oregon’s oldest min- ing district. The purpose of the WMD is to preserve, protect, and promote mining in South- west Oregon. Anyone interested in pro- tecting individual rights to mine on public lands is en- couraged to attend.
