St. Patrick of the Forest Catholic Church Father Moys from St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Grants Pass gave an interesting homily de- scribing how our focus has changed during the past centu- ries, from a God-centered soci- ety, through a country-centered society, and into a self-centered society. Early life centered around God and His laws. People de- pended on Him to help them be successful. Then things changed and people became dependent on the government — thinking its laws would protect them, and help them get what they needed to be happy and successful. Things have changed again, with people believing now that they don’t need God, that they have within themselves every- thing they need to be safe and successful. They think about God now and again, and ask for His help when things seem a little out of their control. But this self- centered attitude does not reflect the Christian values that are criti- cal to our salvation. At baptism we were called by God to be his disciples, to spread the Good News, but there was no promise that this work would be easy. We may run away from this responsibility. But if we repent and are willing to change our lives, God forgives us and Page 11 gives a second chance. Immanuel United Methodist Pastor David Goodrich spoke about Psalm 139: “Wonderful are the works of God.” God is all-seeing, all- powerful, and present every- where. He know us, is with us, and His gift is to allow us to know him. Verse 5: “You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me,’ acknowledges God’s presence. Verse 9-10: “If I take the wings of the morning and settle at the farthest limits of the sea, even there your hand shall led me, and your right hand shall hold me fast,” even if we move away from God, he is still with us. Verse 15: “My frame was not hidden from you when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the Earth.” God is concerned with our being from the beginning. Verse 23-24: “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my thoughts. See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlast- ing,” is a daily prayer. Community Bible Matthew 24 speaks of the signs of the second coming; how- ever, no one knows the day or the hour. In the Old Testament peo- ple lived for 1,600 years, repro- ducing and becoming more evil and ungodly. Lust and immoral- ity were rampant. God had given man free will and he had defiled himself. In Leviticus, Jehovah tells Moses how to guide his people against immorality and gives guidelines for permitted foods to keep the people healthy but they refused to listen. Only Noah walked with God. Therefore, the Lord was sorry that He had made man and vowed to destroy the people. Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord and only he and his fam- ily were saved from the destruc- tion of the flood. Good Shepherd Lutheran St. Francis of Assisi said, “Preach the gospel at all times. If necessary, use words.” What does this mean? It means our actions should speak louder than our words. If we repent and be- lieve in the Kingdom of God, that belief will be the basis for our lives being transformed. When people look at our lives, do they know what we truly believe? Jesus told His disciples that they would become fishers of people - that it would be like holding up a mirror so people could see themselves honestly, and in so doing provide the basis for their transformation to believ- ing in the saving grace of God.
