During the Jan. 13, meet- ing of the Cave Junction City Council, in the council cham- bers of City Hall, Council members Dan Fiske, Tony Paulson, Rita Dyer, and Mayor Ed Faircloth took the oath of office. All were in- cumbents with the exception of Paulson. Faircloth read the State of the City Address, in which he encouraged all residents to become involved in their city government. “There are currently open- ings on the Planning Commis- sion and this spring, there will be positions available on the Budget Committee,” Faircloth said. “Citizens interested in participating are encouraged to come in and discuss posi- tions with us.” The mayor said that con- tracting actions are being de- veloped for improvements to the sidewalks in the main commercial area, as part of the first phase of the Downtown Revitalization Action Plan. Also of good news for the city of Cave Junction, was the announcement of an $84,000 grant, “from the Oregon Eco- nomic and Community Devel- opment Department to imple- ment accessibility improve- ments at City Hall and in Jubi- lee Park,” Faircloth said. “The left turn refuge at Laurel Road and retrofitting of the bridges over the Illinois River south of the city are in the State Transportation Im- provement Plan,” he said, ad- dressing transportation con- cerns. “The construction of these improvements should start in 2006 or 2007.” During the Sheriff’s Re- port, Lt. Lee Harman of the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office told the council that there has been an increase in forged checks and checks be- ing written on closed ac- counts. Also, in the month of December, crimes against property went up, as crimes against persons went down. That’s good news for the Illinois Valley. As deputy’s shifts are reassigned, more deputies are available to patrol the area, allowing more patrol coverage for the City of Cave Junction. In a letter to the mayor and council members, Gary Biggs, Utilities Supervisor, addressed unresolved issues from the Dec. 9 meeting. The transition of West River St. to Daisy Hill Road is being considered for repair of an abrupt edge. Daisy Hill needs new rock and compac- tion, in order for the road to be viable. The council will be mak- ing a decision as to weather the City of Cave Junction will contribute to the maintenance of Daisy Hill Road. When the city starts it’s downtown sidewalk project, anticipated to begin this spring, the sidewalk between 204 and 210 W. Lister will be repaired. Finally, Biggs will request that H.D. Patton Construction extend the asphalt on Ray- mond to the existing grade of the street.
