(Continued from page 1) *RED CROSS AID - Volunteers to serve on an Illinois Valley Disaster Action Team are sought by the Josephine County Chapter of American Red Cross. Team members would be notified by I.V. Fire District when people lose their homes to fire or other disaster, and would meet with those affected to determine how to meet immediate needs. They include food, shelter and clothing. Red Cross will con- duct free classes for volunteers. Of those, she said, one business reported a layoff; three had closures; and four others indicated other adverse economic effects. *BAND SOLOS -- Three talented Illinois Valley High School musicians recently attained recognition. Paul Taylor, a senior, has earned the fourth trumpet seat in the Southern Oregon Youth Symphony in the Medford/Ashland area. Tim Hanson, a freshman trombone player; and Paul Taylor, a senior trumpet player, have earned seats in an international honor band. They will travel this month to Seattle with T. Lund, their music director, to participate in the four-day 26th annual Western International Band Clinic. They’ll get to work with conductors, composers and clinicians from several parts of the world. *RAIN BRAIN - Less than an inch of rain has been recorded in Illinois Valley since the end of April, notes Lou Chauvin, of Junction Realty. He has thus taken it upon him- self to declare an official drought, and urges that people “take unusual measures to conserve water by showering with a friend.” *NOTEPAD - Illinois Valley artists in all media are being invited to display their work in the Illinois Valley Branch Library. Light Up A Life, a celebration of the special people in our lives who have died, will be held in Cave Junction on Dec. 17. Chief Kyle Kirchner, of Illinois Valley Fire District, has been chosen by I.V. Chamber of Com- merce directors as grand marshal for the Christmas Parade in Downtown Cave Junction on Dec. 7 ... She said that hospice keeps in touch with families and care- givers for a year after a death. Willburn said that her own experiences of losing her mother in 1992, her father in 1994, and her husband in 1996, help her empathize with those on the other end. "They have a lot of things to talk about, questions to ask," Willburn said. In dealing with the issues of death, Willburn said that the Illinois Valley volunteers meet regularly to talk to each other about their experiences and feelings. "We need each other's support. It's really hard to go it alone," Willburn said. While 12 of the organiza- tion's more than 82 volunteers live in I.V., the greatest num- ber so far to live here, more are always needed, Shiery said. "You get so many rewards out of it (volunteering)," he said. Light up Life due Dec. 17 Lovejoy Hospice volun- teers and staff are preparing for their annual fund-raiser, "Light Up A Life," a commu- nity event to celebrate the lives of loved ones who have died. The names are read during a special ceremony while par- ticipants gather in remem- brance. This year's event will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. at Immanuel United Methodist Church in Cave Junction on Watkins Street. During the celebration, participants may request a special ornament in honor of a loved one. Donations for the ornaments are appreciated, but not required. Firefighters had to drive down a somewhat narrow, winding dirt road off Westside Road to reach the fire. “Parking was a nightmare,” said Gavlik, noting that be- sides fire units, there also was response by American Medi- cal Response and Josephine County Sheriff’s Office. One unidentified man suf- fered some smoke inhalation and burns on his hands and forearms, said Gavlik. He re- fused medical transport. Rural/Metro Fire Dept. from Grants Pass responded to cover the Selma area during the emergency. At 6:40 a.m. the last I.V. unit left the scene, and units then responded at 6:53 a.m. to a reported structure fire on Wild Park Lane. However, that alarm turned out to in- volve only a smoldering mat- tress, said Gavlik.
