Chairman’s Report Editor’s note: The Chairman’s Report will resume in a future issue of Siletz News. Your invitation is in the mail! … Maybe? It’s important to get everyone to respond to the Census survey. It’s a matter of money, representation and pride. Each person not counted means a loss of more than $3,000 to programs like SNAP, clinics, Head Start, transportation and law enforcement. Oregon can gain an additional U.S. rep- resentative with a c omplete c ount. Indians have been undercounted in the Census for 230 years. In addition to the usual problems of getting a good response rate to the every-10-year Census, the post office delivery system is causing an issue. Beginning March 12, the Census Bureau will send invitations and instructions in the mail to households with a physical address, but can’t send them to households with only a post office box. Because mem- bers of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians have 552 post office box addresses, about 1,500 people are affected. The Census Bureau has a plan to hand-deliver invitations to those house- holds. It is extremely short-staffed, how- ever, and will not be available in this area for a long time. To over- come this, the Tribe’s Com- plete Count Committee will mail similar, but unofficial, instruc- tions to all holders of P.O. boxes. Watch and listen for television and radio advertisements about the Census. The Census Kick- off Party with gifts and prizes will be coming to your area offices on April 1. If you have any questions about responding to the Census, call the dedi- cated phone number at 541-444-8285. You can also call any of your area offices. They will also have computers available for you to use to respond to the survey. You’ve been undercounted and dis- counted. Respond to the Census invitation. Now is the time to stand up and make your voice heard – “I am Siletz and I count.” The Census Kick-off Party with gifts and prizes will be coming to your area offices on April 1.
