He went to his first class on Jan. 16, 2018, and instantly fell in love with taekwondo. After his month was up I inquired about continuing, only to realize what an expensive sport it is. What had my mom gotten us into? Fast forward 13 months and KaiBear has advanced seven belt ranks. He has competed in three tournaments where he has earned five medals. Kai also was the first Tiger to be asked to join the Leadership Program at Lauraine’s ATA! None of this would be possible without the help of the Confederated Tribe of Siletz Indians, the Johnson O’Malley Program and Nick Viles, education specialist at the Eugene Area Office. I am beyond grateful my son has access to this program and can continue to train in a sport he loves. Thank you so very much! Joyce Retherford, FDP Director 541-444-8393 Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Fund Tribal Member Recruitment for Advisory Board Applications are being accepted from Siletz Tribal members interested in serving on the Advisory Board of the Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Fund (STCCF). This is for a three-year appointment from July 2019 through June 2022. Applications must be received by 4:30 p.m. on May 31, 2019. The STCCF Advisory Board is composed of seven positions, including one Siletz Tribal Council representative; three at-large Siletz Tribal members; two non-Tribal members agreed upon by the Oregon governor and Tribal chairman and approved by the Tribal Council; and one non-Tribal member selected by the Tribal chairman from a list provided by the governor and approved by Tribal Council. Advisory Board members serve in a volunteer capacity but are reimbursed for mileage and per diem for attendance at quarterly board meetings and distri- bution receptions. The Advisory Board meets quarterly in January, April, July and October to review applications from charitable organizations, schools and other local govern- ment programs. Board members make recommendations to Tribal Council for the distribution of charitable funds. Board members also assist with the distribution of awards at receptions held each quarter at Chinook Winds Casino Resort. Huffman receives hand-carved ceremonial staff Tribal member Nora Huffman of Tolowa Court in Siletz was presented with a beau- tiful hand-carved ceremonial staff at a recent spiritual devotion program held monthly at the Siletz library meeting room and hosted by the Baha’l Faith of Lincoln County. Larry Love, creator and carver, presented the staff to Huffman and then gave a 15 minute explanation of the founding, creating and carving of the staff to those in atten- dance. Love, a Baha’l member from Newport, started the presentation with a prayer to the Great Spirit, Mother Earth and animal spirits, and addressed the spirits of the Four Directional. He explained he prayed to the bear, hawk and wolf for guidance, direction, enlightenment and strength. Love then gave a blessing to the staff for protection of Huffman, who was asked about her new quest with the staff. She replied, “I just want to be of service to the Tribe, to humanity and for anyone who needs assistance.” The staff is almost 6 feet long with art of the bear, hawk and wolf; carved pieces of bark; and a quarter-inch wide path that winds down the length of the staff. Perched on the top of the staff are eight carved extremities resembling fingers with turquoise nuggets on the tips, honoring the four major and the four minor spiritual directions. In the palm of the valley between the “fingers” lies a bed of turquoise and on that bed is a tortoise. When asked about the time it took to construct the staff, Love quipped, “I quit counting after I hit 300 hours and I’m thinking this will be my last one.” When asked what was the most difficult day of his labor, Love didn’t hesitate in saying, “The day I gave over my ideas to a higher power.” He added, “Mother Nature, the animal spirits and of course, the Great Spirit led the way after I took myself out of it.” 8 • Siletz News • April 2019 To learn more about the charitable fund, please visit ctsi.nsn.us/Charitable- Contribution-Fund or contact Denise Garrett, advisory board secretary, at stccf@ live.com; 800-922-1399, ext. 1227; or 541-444-8227.
