Holden receives STAHS award during Community Days The Siletz Tribal Arts & Heritage Society presented the second annual Cultural Enlightenment Award on April 21 at the Lincoln City Community Days Banquet. The banquet is held annually to cel- ebrate the contributions and accomplish- ments of citizens who have improved the quality of life for those residing in the area. Sixteen awards were given during the evening’s festivities. The STAHS award is presented each year to a person who has taken measures to promote, celebrate and share the unique qualities, history and culture of indig- enous peoples of this continent. This year’s recipient, Mike Holden, has worn many hats, including Lincoln City’s chief of police and mayor, director of the Chamber of Commerce and direc- tor of security for Chinook Winds Casino Resort. He was one of the first people to be appointed to the Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Fund board and currently is the chairman. From 1999 to date, the fund has donated $11.6 million to nonprofit orga- nizations in an 11-county service area that includes Lincoln County. The Logsden Community Club is a nonprofit 501 C3 that donates a portion of its profits back to the community, includ- ing the Logsden Rural Fire Department. The Logsden Community Center, located at the junction of the Logsden/ Siletz Highway and Moonshine Park Road, is situated on a historic site where the local school once sat. Todays’ facility, built in the 1980s, is available to rent for local gatherings, including weddings, family reunions and other events.
