Siletz Tribal Arts and Heritage Society needs your recipes for cookbook We would like to develop a cook- book in time for the holidays. We hope you will participate. You are all invited to submit one recipe or more if you like. Do you have to belong to the Con- federated Tribes of Siletz Indians? No, we will put your name and “Friend of STAHS” by your recipe. You can send in Native traditional recipes, family favorite recipes, new ones you love and just about anything else you can think of. You can add a picture of yourself and a little information, but be sure to include your name and Tribe. You can get the recipes to the right folks in a couple ways: STBC to close Siletz Tribal Prints & Gifts During the last few months, the Siletz Tribal Business Corporation conducted a thorough financial analysis of its Siletz Tribal Prints & Gifts, LLC (STPG) that resulted in the decision to close it down and cease operations. During the last few years, STPG was in a phase where it often needed to be subsidized to continue its operations. The financial analysis showed that even with the change in business name, focus on Native retail and consignment gifts and prints, it could not generate the revenue needed to become profitable and grow as a viable business. With the purchase of the Salem devel- opment properties and focus on construct- ing and opening a joint-Tribal casino and hotel in Salem, along with the possible expansion plans at Chinook Winds Casino Resort, it was determined that the STBC needed to prioritize its financial resources. As a result, STPG will close its retail operations on June 30, 2017. Please visit our website at stpgifts. com or call us at 541-996-5550 for more information on store hours, inventory and asset going out of business sale and completion or refund of any projects that were currently in process. We would like to take this oppor- tunity to thank all the Tribal members, STBC Board of Directors, STPG staff and patrons who worked so hard these last nine years on behalf of and for Siletz Tribal Prints & Gifts, LLC. • • Email them to jessiemarie1944@ yahoo.com Mail them to STAHS, P.O. I made these in April at the Salem warehouse and they are delicious. Snack Crackers 1 package of ranch dressing mix Red pepper flakes (to taste) 1 sleeve crackers ¼-½ cup oil (vegetable, olive or grapeseed) Put crackers in a plastic re-sealable food storage bag. Drizzle with the oil and add the powdered ranch dressing mix and red pepper flakes. Seal the bag with some air in it and turn it over until the crackers are coated. Let stand for a day (any longer and the crackers become stale). You also can substitute garlic pow- der and parmesan cheese in place of the ranch dressing mix and red pepper flakes. Experiment with your favorite seasonings and enjoy. LIKE us on Facebook at Siletz Tribal FDPIR. We would like to see more people sharing their recipes on our FB. Hazel stick gathering is a must for anyone interested in making traditional Siletz baskets. Spruce root can be dug all year round and is used for the weavers or weft of Siletz baskets. Bear grass and maidenhair fern are used for overlay to make our traditional designs or marks in our baskets and both are picked in late summer.
