New Tribal cultural fishing site opens for 2015 season near Lincoln City The Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians has opened a new Tribal cul- tural fishing site located on Lincoln County land along Drift Creek south of Lincoln City. It will be used by Siletz Tribal members to fish for salmon using traditional methods. Tribal members who possess a valid Tribal fishing license and salmon tag will be able to fish the original site of the old Drift Creek covered bridge using a dip net, spear or gaff hook. The 2015 Tribal salmon fishing season runs through Dec. 29, 2015. In 1980, the Siletz Tribe signed an agreement with the State of Oregon to permanently define the Tribe’s hunt- ing, fishing, gathering and trapping rights. Included in that agreement is the Tribe’s ability to harvest up to 200 salmon per year using traditional December USDA distribution dates Siletz Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Monday Spanish Rice Dec. 1 Dec. 2 Dec. 3 Dec. 4 Dec. 7 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Salem Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Dec. 14 1:30 – 6:30 p.m. Dec. 15 9 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. Dec. 16 9 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. Dec. 17 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. We’ve had some additions to our food boxes over the past couple of months. In the fresh category, we are now approved to offer Clementines and seasonally fresh cranberries. In the meat category, we have added pork loin chops. These are awesome and have been well-accepted by our clients. Coming very soon will be ground bison. They are putting this into the bonus category, so it will not count against your meat choices. I made this recipe at the Siletz ware- house in November and it is so good. 2 pounds ground beef* 1 onion, diced* 1 bell pepper, diced* 2 cups water 2 cups tomato juice* 1 can diced tomatoes* 2 cups rice* 1 teaspoon Cajun seasoning 1 can black beans, drained* Salt and pepper to taste methods from three cultural fishing sites on tributaries to the Siletz River. Sites can be replaced if any of them prove to be impractical to fish. The Tribe recently received approval from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife to replace its difficult-to-access Dewey Creek site with the site on Drift Creek. The approval is for the 2015 Tribal fishing season. Approval of the Tribe’s Drift Creek cultural fishing site will not affect the public’s ability to continue to fish the same area in accordance with ODFW’s regulations. Anyone who has questions about the Tribe’s cultural fishing activities can contact Tribal Natural Resources Manager Mike Kennedy at 541-444- 8232 or 800-922-1399, ext. 1232.
