Hatfield presents research at NCAI conference on climate change effects Siletz Tribal member Dr. Samantha Chisholm Hatfield recently presented at the NCAI (National Congress of Ameri- can Indians) Tribal Leaders We Have Always Been Scientists panel at the mid- year conference in St. Paul, Minn. Dr. Chisholm Hatfield, selected from a highly competitive national pool of applicants, was invited to present her research regarding climate change effects on American Indian Tribes and traditional culture. This included research conducted with Siletz Tribal Elders in 2014. Dr. Chisholm Hatfield is on limited grant-funding through Oregon State University and works with the Oregon Climate Change Research Institute to help Tribes identify climate change effects that impact not only natural resources, but also traditional culture now and into the future. Her work has been considered groundbreaking by multiple profession- als in various fields. She works primarily with Northwest Tribes, but has been subcontracted to conduct research with Tribes as far away as the Great Basin in southern Utah. Matsutake mushroom permits for commercial sales available Aug. 5 CORVALLIS, Ore. – Annual permits for matsutake mushrooms go on sale from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 5 at the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area office, 855 Highway 101 in Reedsport, Ore. Anyone gathering matsutake mush- rooms within the Siuslaw National For- est for the purpose of selling must carry a commercial-use permit while picking. One hundred permits will be available for sale at $270 per permit, with a limit of one permit per person. Permits will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. To purchase a permit, the following information must be provided: • • Valid identification card issued by a state or U.S. federal government Vehicle make, model and license plate number Permits can be purchased using cash, check or credit card. After Aug. 5, unsold permits can be purchased at the Siuslaw National Forest headquarters in Corvallis, the Central Coast Ranger Station in Waldport and the ODNRA office in Reedsport. No permits are needed if gathering matsutakes for personal use. Personal use restrictions are six matsutakes per person per day and the mushroom must be cut in half length-wise immediately upon har- vesting to remove its commercial value. Please be aware that similar-looking poisonous mushrooms exist in the same area as matsutakes. Do not disturb topsoil when search- ing for matsutakes by digging or raking. Upon harvesting a matsutake, return soil or debris attached to the stem back into the cavity created by the removed mushroom and cover the hole.
