Siletz Culture Camp July 16-18, 2013 By Tiffany Stuart This year’s Culture Camp started off with light rain, but the classes moved ahead and campers were ready to learn. Thirteen classes taught arts that would used for singing and dancing (Siletz basket making, flint knapping, moccasins, loom beadwork, peyote beadwork, shawls, soap- stone, drumsticks, bow making, maddishes, pine nut and cedar bark weaving). Seven other Siletz traditional ways that were taught included Dee-Ni language, storytelling, plant identification, fishing, kayaking and cooking salmon and eel. Five additional activities included scrapbooking, Head Start fun, Kids Corner, ropes course and decoupage. Campers visited and played with other Siletz Tribal members from different locations whom they may not have met before. Campers were able to leave camp with finished projects and knowledge on how to complete bigger projects in the future. Thanks to all the teachers of the different activities and also the kitchen workers and volunteers who made the camp possible. The camp ended with a salmon dinner with Elders being served first. Thanks to all the Elders who came to camp to share their knowledge with the younger generation.
