Chairman’s Report education Fee-to-trust legislation Parade A small but great gathering of the Education Committee, staff and students took place at the Hee Hee Illahee RV Resort in Salem in June. It was good to meet the graduates and hear many suc- cess stories. This seemed to be a record year for graduates, not only from colleges but high school, middle school and on down to our Head Start kids. Congratulations to the students and to the parents for making this happen. Also, thank you to our Education staff for their hard work! As you all know, we have been working hard on our fee-to-trust legisla- tion. We met in late June with the Grand Ronde and Coos Tribes to offer remedies. Tribes are taking information back to their councils to review. I felt the meeting was productive. In the meantime, the Senate Indian Affairs Committee will hold a hearing on our legislation on the Senate side of Congress. We had a hearing in the last Congress, so this will be the same but necessary to get things moving on the Senate side. The Tribe is happy to announce that the grand marshals for this year’s Nesika Illahee Pow-Wow parade will be all past council members, both pre-Restoration as well as after Restoration. It will be a great honor to have them participate in the weekend’s events. elders Council Meeting Oregon mascot legislation The Oregon Legislature is consider- ing a change to the Department of Educa- tion’s ban on Indian mascots in Oregon. Hearings have been held at which the Tribe testified that some Indian mascots are not offensive and local Tribes should be consulted and approve or deny the mas- cot. Our own Siletz Valley Warriors are at issue, so we hope the legislation passes.
