Siletz Tribal education
Student Gathering

The Student Gathering hosted by
the Siletz Education Department and
the Education Committee took place
June 18 at the Hee Hee Illahee RV Resort
in Salem, Ore.
Nick Sixkiller and Tribal Chairman
Delores Pigsley welcomed all in atten-
dance. Lillie and Reggie Butler, Tribal
Council members, attended and Lillie
gave the blessing on the food. We enjoyed
Wooden Nickel’s steak and chicken tacos
with all the toppings.
Each student was recognized who
graduated this year from higher education.
There were 28 graduates in all, including
those in adult vocational training and those
with associate’s and bachelor’s degrees.
Three graduates were in attendance
– James Anello, Rosa Hernandez-Chavez
and Barry Kessinger. Also among the 32
people at the event were the three Tribal
Council members; Education Depart-
ment staff, including Bev Youngman,
Nick Sixkiller, Katy Holland and Sonya
Moody-Jurado; Kaye Stainbrook, mother
of graduate Desiree Stainbrook; and
Marlene Stuart and her grandson, Nayson
Tooya.
It was good to see all ages at this event
because learning is lifelong.
“Education is key and it unlocks a lot
of doors,” said Sixkiller.
