STAHS makes basket purchase with Tribal charitable grant, other funds The Siletz Tribal Arts and Heritage Society (STAHS) made a significant pur- chase of five Siletz baskets through a grant from the Siletz Tribal Charitable Con- tribution Fund and money from STAHS fundraising efforts. STAHS Vice Chairman David Hatch, working with Tribal Cultural Director Robert Kentta, became aware of the bas- kets held by Arthur Erickson of Arthur W. Erickson Inc. Fine Arts and Unusual Antiques in Portland, Ore. The baskets were presented to the Tribal Council by Hatch and STAHS members Gloria Ingle and Margo Hudson. The acquisitions will be owned by the Siletz Tribal Cultural Center. The purchases of another two collec- tions were completed in April to further add to the Siletz Tribal Collections. The first one includes seven baskets and the other includes five baskets and a tradi- tional Siletz gambling drum. Details will be shared in a future issue of Siletz News. The warehouse that handles the storage and distribution of all of our commodity foods was moved from Paris Brothers in Kansas City, Mo., to Americold in Nampa, Idaho. During this transition period, several products were not available for ordering while a portion of the inventory was shipped between the new and old ware- houses. It appears that all of this has been completed, so our warehouse is now fully stocked. I’ve made these cookies and they are so good. Hope you all get a chance to try them. Name: * 1/3 Cup milk * ¼ Cup all-purpose flour * ½ Cup mixed candied fruit, finely chopped ¾ Cup chocolate chips * ¼ Cup sugar *2 Tablespoons honey * 2 Tablespoons shortening • In a saucepan, combine butter, milk, sugar & honey. Bring to a full boil. Remove from the heat; stir in almonds and fruit. Stir in flour until blended. Drop by tablespoonfuls 3 inches apart onto greased & floured baking sheets. Spread batter with a spoon to form 2-1/2 inch circles. Bake at 350* for 6-9 minutes or until edges are lightly browned. Cool on pans for 1 minute before carefully removing to waxed paper to cool completely. For coating, combine chocolate chips and shortening in a small saucepan. Cook over low heat until melted. Spread 1 teaspoonful over the bottom of each cookie. When chocolate is almost set, draw wavy lines with a fork or cake decorating comb. Store in the refrigerator. • When I made these, I used whole wheat flour in place of the all-purpose flour and replaced the almonds and candied fruit with the FRUIT & NUT MIX that we have in our food boxes. 8 • Siletz News • May 2013 Roll No: Address: City: Telephone: Day ( State: ) ZIP: Evening ( ) Please indicate your committee preference numerically, i.e., 1 for first prefer- ence, 2 for second preference and 3 for third preference.
