Reading promoted at 2012 UO pow-wow; this year’s event is coming up By Tiffany Stuart Eva Clayton, Siletz Tribal Elder, participated in the University of Oregon Mother’s Day Pow-Wow 2012 by reading her book Busy Body Bee. The American Indian children who participated in the reading obtained hands-on learning through her book. This story was handed down to her and teaches people about morals, such as respect. Approximately 75 students received American Indian books after dancing in the Tiny Tot Special. Documentation and surveys also were taken to jump-start a research project on American Indian students in education. Thanks so much to Eva for coming to teach our next generation. This project was made possible through a Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Fund grant of $700 and through my doctoral grant writ- ing class at the university. Thanks to my friends Sada Hatcher (Klamath) and Jena Fox (Cherokee), both American Indian teachers and master’s graduates from the UO Sapsik’walá Proj- ect; my brother, Tim Stuart; and my mom, Marlene Stuart, for helping out with this grant when I was in the hospital giving birth to my son. We hope that reading was encouraged through this grant and being physically active to be healthy in mind, body and spirit. For more information about the Siletz Tribe, visit ctsi.nsn.us 2013 UO pow-wow Please come and dance at the Univer- sity of Oregon pow-wow this year on May 10-11 in Eugene, Ore.
