Clevenger named coordinator of new family focused Home Visiting Program Patrice A. Clevenger has been hired as the Home Visiting Program coordina- tor (Maternal, Infant, Early Childhood Home Visiting Grant Program, also known as MIECHV). This position is in the Tribal Education Department. Clevenger’s office is located in the Tribal administration building. “I am excited about this new program, which is intended to help families feel more empowered and more successful. Our goal is to assess the strengths and weaknesses of families, to improve the coordination of existing programs for families and to identify a home visiting plan to improve outcomes for families,” said Clevenger. “Our program will look at pregnant women, expectant fathers, parents and primary caregivers of chil- dren birth to kindergarten entry identified through our needs assessment, which is just beginning.” Clevenger comes to the Tribe from Providence Portland and The Swindells Child Resource Center at the Coast, where she served as community resource specialist. She also served as the coordinator of Lincoln County’s Com- munity Connection Network through Oregon Health & Science University and the Center for Children and Youth with Special Health Needs. Clevenger obtained her B.A. from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, and an M.A. from Fresno Pacific University in Fresno, Calif., in adminis- trative services. She began her professional career by teaching hearing-impaired children age 18 months through 5 years and later taught learning disabled, hearing impaired as well as third-, fourth- and fifth-grade children. New program has 5-year grant The Tribe’s Home Visiting Program is on a five-year grant cycle. At the end, Clevenger hopes to be able to show: • • • • • • • Improvements in maternal and pre- natal health, infant health and child health and development Increased school readiness Reductions in the incidence of child maltreatment Improved parenting related to child development outcomes Improved family socio-economic status Greater coordination of referrals to community resources and supports Reductions in crime and domestic violence “There are so many wonderful pro- grams already working toward these goals. We will continue to work together to make life better for our children and their fami- lies,” said Clevenger. “I look forward to working with all of you and thank you all for your welcomes and kindness as I learn the ropes and the culture here at Siletz. Time to gather materials for baskets Spring is almost here and very soon hazel sticks will be ready to pick and peel. Hazel stick gathering is a must for anyone interested in making traditional Siletz baskets. Spruce root can be dug all year round and is used for the weavers or weft of Siletz baskets. Bear grass and maidenhair fern are used for overlay to make our traditional designs or marks in our baskets and both are picked in late summer. Just a reminder – basket mate- rials must be gathered in a timely fashion. Clevenger is married to Scott Clev- enger and they have four children – Dustin and his wife Shanyn Clevenger from Salem; Derek Clevenger, who currently resides in the Middle East and serves as a body guard at an embassy while serv- ing concurrently in the Army National Guard as a medic; Savannah Clevenger, who attends college in McMinnville and resides in Jefferson, Ore.; and Hannah Clevenger, who lives in Monmouth and attends Western Oregon University, study- ing criminal justice and psychology. Clevenger loves living on the Oregon Coast. It’s never too hot, she says, in fact the weather is near perfect except for all the rain. But even the rain has become welcome.
