Love, Elaine, Ebby and Bubby Luv, Aunt Lisa, Uncle Robby and kids To the editor: RE: Siletz Tribal Elders: The Siletz Tribal Elders have a raffle at the August pow-wow and Restoration Pow-Wow. At this time, I would like to thank everyone who has supported our raffle by buying tickets, donating to the raffle by working in the booth and donating raffle items. We use the money raised to buy flowers for Elders who have passed and gifts for Elders who have been hospitalized. We also finance the Tiny Tot competition at the pow-wow. We occasionally donate to other events. We have a great respect for our Veterans. Without them, we would not be here enjoying our freedom. In our Feb. 9, 2013, meeting, Ed Ben described the establish- ment of a World War II Memorial to be constructed in Salem. They needed financial support. Rose Bremner made a motion to donate $200 to the World War II Memorial Foundation. There were 62 Elders in our Feb. 9, 2013, meeting. The motion passed and a check was sent to the Oregon WWII Memorial Foundation. We have received the enclosed thank you letter (see below) from the Oregon WWII Memorial Foundation. Thank you to everyone who helps us. It gives us an opportunity to assist others. Sincerely, Shirley Walker Tribal Elders Chairman To the editor: where has the Dream Gone? Attending a recent concert, I began observing what was going on around me. It was a good night at the concert, full crowd and they streamed to the gaming floor following the show. We were making money and people were enjoying themselves. So what was missing from this picture? Tribal members! The pit bosses were non-members, the dealers were non-members and the people working the floor were non-members. Everywhere I went in the casino, we were employing non-members. I am sure they were doing their jobs well, but the dream was to employ our Tribal members. With 700 jobs in the casino, the golf course and the hotel, there should be no unemployment for our members. The second part of our dream was to create opportunities for members to create businesses that supply the casino with food, supplies and services. Let’s face it, members, the casino should be more than a per capita check once a year. How can we make this happen? We have to have recruiting practices and training opportunities that make this a reality. Don’t let our dream fade – put it on the front burner. Your contribution to the establishment of a WWII Memorial on the State Capitol grounds in Salem is sincerely appreciated. You will receive certificates for your honorees. Your gift will be used to build a beautiful memorial that honors Oregon Veterans who served during the war as soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines. It will also salute Oregon citizens who remained on the home front and planted victory gardens, stood watch over our land and coast, and sacrificed to support the war effort – from beans to bullets to Liberty Ships. We would like to list all donors on the Oregon WWII Memorial website.
