Chairman’s Report Thank you to all who supported me in the election this year! I will work to support the Tribe and Tribal members in all the Tribe’s and members’ activities. Bud Lane, Robert Kentta, Craig Dor- say and I traveled to Washington. D.C., in February and met with our congressional delegation to urge them to re-introduce our legislation that recognizes our 1855 treaty boundaries. We were advised that the legislation would be introduced soon and we look forward to Congress taking positive action on it this year. Additionally, we attended Tribal Housing Impact Day, a meeting with other Tribal officials and our Housing director, Sami Jo Difuntorum, to pro- mote and support NAHASDA (Native American Housing Assistance and Self- Determination Act) funds. Congress is taking a hard look at how housing funds are used and the need to keep the Indian funds separate from HUD funds. Sami Jo is an excellent representative speaking on behalf of our Tribe. Bud Lane and I also had the opportunity to explain our situation of being a restored Tribe and the fact that we have a long way to go to meet the needs of our members. I had the opportunity at Chinook Winds to welcome to Oregon and our Tribe a delegation of people from Japan who held a workshop at the casino. The delegation is from the tsunami-stricken areas and is doing research and working to understand the effects of the disaster on our coast. The whole group was very outspoken and did a good job. We were in Washing- ton most of the week talking with staff and congressional officials. Oregon’s First Lady Cylvia Hayes also welcomed the group. Many beach cleanup volunteers and state agency officials were present at the workshop. I was assured the delegation was enjoying our facilities. At our most recent Tribal Council meeting, Standing Committee appoint- ments were made and I want to thank all the members who have volunteered to serve on those committees. Almost everyone was appointed to a committee of their choice. They provide an important service to the Tribe. I have had many inquiries from Tribal members regarding the Cobell settlement. In order to be part of the settlement, one has to have or inherited trust land that is or was leased and have an Individual Indian Money (IIM) account. Call 800- 961-6109 or visit indiantrust.com for more information. Delores Pigsley Spring is time to start gathering basket-making materials Spring is almost here and very soon hazel sticks will be ready to pick and peel. Hazel stick gathering is a must for anyone interested in making traditional Siletz baskets. Spruce root can be dug all year round and is used for the weavers or weft of Siletz baskets. Bear grass and maidenhair fern are used for overlay to make our traditional designs or marks in our baskets and both are picked in late summer. Tribal members interested in gathering can call Bud Lane at 800-922-1399, ext. 1320, or 541-444-8320, or e-mail budl@ ctsi.nsn.us.
