Questions answered about Tribal fishing licenses and tags and their uses There have been some questions lately about Tribal fishing licenses and tags. Tribal members must have a Tribal fishing license and salmon tag in their pos session in order to legally exercise their traditional salmon fishing rights. * Tags allow Tribal members to fish for salmon only. They are not valid for steelhead or any other fish. > Tags are valid only during the two month Tribal salmon fishing season, which is set by the Natural Resources Department once the fall rains begin and the fish start moving into the three streams where the fishing sites are located. Licenses and tags can be obtained at the Tribal Natural Resources office in the administration building in Siletz beginning in mid-August through the two-month salmon season, which usu ally starts in mid-October and runs into December. Tags will not be issued prior to that time. ♦♦ Tags allow Tribal members to fish using any of three methods (dip net, spear or gaff hook). The Tribe’s Hunting/Fishing/Gathering Consent Decree describes each of these as follows: “Dip net’’ shall mean a net with a mesh size no larger than 5 inches (measured from the inside of one vertical knot to the outside of the opposite vertical knot), attached to a hoop no larger than 4 feet in diameter and attached directly to a handle; dip nets shall be attended at all times. “Spear” shall mean a hand- propelled barbed single- or multiple point device attached directly to a long shaft; no multiple-pointed spear shall have an overall width greater than 8 inches. “Gaff hook” shall mean a large, strong, single point hook attached directly to a handle. These are the only methods Below are some important points regarding what the Tribal license and tag do and do not allow Tribal members to do. ❖ Tags are good at the three Tribal cul tural fishing sites only (Euchre Creek Falls, Dewey Creek Falls and Little Rock Creek at the Tribe’s hatchery property). They are not a substitute for a state license for fishing any where else. Maps and directions to the three Tribal cultural fishing sites are available at the Tribal Natural Resources office and on the Tribe’s website in the Natural Resources sec tion (Tribal Services/Other Depart- ments/Natural Resources). ❖ ❖ ❖ ♦* allowed to be used (i.e., fishing poles are not allowed). Tags are for Siletz Tribal member use only. They cannot be issued to or given to a non-Tribal member. Tribal members can, however, give their tag to another licensed Siletz Tribal member to fish for them. Tribal youth age 12 and younger must be supervised by an adult while fishing. Fishing sites can exhibit slippery conditions, high or fast-moving water and other hazards. As with any outdoor activity, there is a risk of physical injury or death while fishing using traditional methods. Only those physically capable should attempt to fish using these methods. Children should not be left unattended at any of the fishing sites. Tribal members who want a tag must come in and fill out the tag form with their own address, phone number, etc. and must personally sign the tag form. For those who cannot personally make it into the Tribal Natural Resources Department office to pick up their tags, the forms and tags will be mailed to them if they call the Natural Resources office (see phone numbers below) and provide the following information: name, enrollment number, phone number and mailing address. The tag will not be valid until they sign the form and return the yellow part of the form to the Natural Resources Department. * Tags will not be issued to one person for another person (i.e., spouses, children, relatives, etc.). * Once filled, the tag must be attached to the fish and the catch reported to the Natural Resources Department within three business days. ❖ The person to whom the tag is issued is responsible for reporting if the tag is filled. Everyone who reports that they filled their tag will be entered into a drawing for a $50 gift card. **♦ Tribal members can possess only one Tribal tag in their name at a time. If they fill that tag, they can obtain another tag if additional tags are still available. Possessing a Tribal tag does not preclude also possessing a state-issued license and tag.
