Senate Bill S908 1 am furnishing a copy of Senate Bill S908 (see below and page 3). This is the bill the Tribe has worked on for a couple of years to identify the boundary of our res ervation as it was originally established. The legislation gives the Tribe and the Bureau of Indian Affairs a boundary by which the Tribe may have land taken into trust and be considered “on-reservation.” The Tribe lobbied for several years to have our trust applications processed in the Northwest Regional Office versus the Washington, D.C., office because of the lengthy time it took to get land into trust. We were successful in having the process changed so currently the Siletz Agency processes the work and the regional office in Portland takes the final action. The other part of the process that is time consuming is the time it takes to pro cess trust applications as on-reservation versus off-reservation. Because the Tribe lost all of its land through termination, there currently are no existing boundaries (like a reservation boundary) to determine that trust applications meet the on-reser vation process. This is true even when the land is connected or when adjoining land already is declared reservation or trust land; all our trust applications are considered off-reservation. The legislation addresses the issue and is very much needed as we move forward to purchase property for housing and other Tribal needs. We thank our Senators Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden for introducing our leg islation and for their action in requesting an early hearing on the bill, which will be held Feb. 2. On our last visit to Washington, D.C., when we met with Congressman Kurt Schrader, he informed us he would intro duce the same legislation in the House of Representatives very soon.
