opening set for Sept. 18

The two women always knew they
wanted to do something big, they just
never knew what. In discovering each
other’s many hidden talents, a sort of mas
ter of all trades, their passion and dream
was clear - Dee-Ne Gifts.
Siletz Tribal member Tina Retasket
now owns this small business in Siletz.
Dee-Ne Gifts, LLC loosely translates in
Athabaskan as “gifts of the people.”
Right beside Retasket is her sister,
Margo Hudson, who volunteers her time
to the business. A grand opening has
been set for Sept. 18 from 1-3 p.m. in
coordination with Siletz Massage, which
is upstairs in the same building.
On Aug. 12, not only was the Nesika
Illahee Pow-Wow kicking off, an open
house was held at Dee-Ne Gifts. Along
with Retasket and Hudson were many

to create artwork through seniors in high
school can participate. Enter the topic
based on the grade the child will be in this
fall. If no entries are received for a particu
lar grade, entries will be chosen from the
younger children’s work as appropriate.
Art must be 11” wide x 8.5” tall.

the doors to the community. Although
an actual grand opening is set for this
month, “We’re getting the doors open for
pow-wow and letting people know we are
here,” said Hudson in August.
Dan Lundy gave an opening prayer.
“With these blessings, good things are
sure to come,” said Hudson.
Some concerns had been brought to
their attention about the building’s impact
on a lot of lives - abuse and addiction
were named, but many of those lives now
have turned around.
This is a place set up for others to
come to, “not just for us, for the com
munity,” said Hudson.
Every item offered is traditional and
hand-made, not manufactured. Many of
them are on consignment and offered
on a “Native American side” and on a
“contemporary side.”
Some of the diverse merchandise at
this new local business includes Umpqua
food products, organic soaps, aprons,
custom-made ribbon shirts, an assort
ment of books and CDs, Siletz Tribal
Smokehouse products, beaded ornaments,
shawls, jingle dresses and several options
for creating your own regalia.
Future plans include a kid’s comer
where children can create their own work
of art, healthy food and drink choices and
eventually classes for others to learn to
make regalia.
Dee-Ne Gifts, LLC is located at
146 S Gaither St. in Siletz. Business
hours are Tuesday through Saturday from
10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

2012 TRIBAL ELECTION INFORMATION

Card
The Siletz Tribal Council has approved a new signature card along with revisions to
the Election Ordinance regarding the process of verifying the new signature cards.
The significant change includes new verification options that can reduce the
involvement of the Enrollment Department in the signature verification process.
The new verification process provides Tribal members the opportunity to have their
signature notarized or provide a copy of current identification with name, address
and signature to verify the signature card. If neither of those options is available, the
Enrollment Department still will assist in verifying signatures with documentation
on file.
The new signature cards will be mailed to all Tribal members age 18 and older in
mid-September. With the election only five months away, it is very important that
the new signature card be returned as soon as possible.

The revised Election Ordinance is available online at ctsi.nsn.us; select Government
Operations then Tribal Ordinances. A new signature card is posted on the Election
Board website under “Members Only.”
