Pilgrim presents salmon bench honoring First Nations of SW Oregon By Natasha Kavanaugh On May 7, Tribal Elder Agnes Baker Pilgrim of Grants Pass, Ore., presented a salmon bench to the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians. “The creation of this bench was part of a larger project which happened in 2005-2006 in Ashland, Oregon,” said Lloyd Matthew Haines, attorney, property developer and the person who commis sioned the project. In the process of constructing a new downtown building, an alder tree was removed from the site. “The Native American community does ceremonies throughout the year (at the equinoxes and solstices) and considers this tree sculpture and the site on which it sits as a sacred site,” said Haines. Haines commissioned Russell Beebe (Ojibwe) of Medford, Ore., to create the sculpture. “In 2004 while contemplating the cre ation of the large memorial sculpture ‘We Are Here,’ the idea of carving a functional bench shaped as a grand salmon presented itself perfectly in the theme of Northwest Tribal Culture,” said Beebe. The memorial sculpture created from that local alder tree reaches 20 feet high and includes a figure of a Native woman modeled after Pilgrim (Takelma). This same wood was chosen for the salmon bench, which was carved first. ‘Agnes was very much involved in helping me interpret traditional customs,” said Beebe. The sculpture honors the First Nations of Southwest Oregon, including not only the Takelma, Shasta, Tututni and other Tribes, but also the Salmon Nation, Bear Nation, Tree Nations and all species of life in this region. “It has been my privilege to play my part in supporting and honoring the First Nations, as well as participating in the healing between the various cultures in Southern Oregon,” said Haines. The land upon which the sculpture will stand is owned by the Oregon Depart ment of Transportation. A pathway will lead from the sculpture site down to Ashland Creek. The salmon bench currently is in the Siletz Tribe’s repository in Siletz, Ore. “It pleases me greatly to know the Salmon Bench will forever reside in the Tribal museum. I understand it is impor tant to remember those traditions that help us to live forward in a good way. To think that my carving may touch the hearts of generations to come gives me great con tentment,” said Beebe.
