The Tribal Healthy Traditions proj ect seeks to improve the health of Siletz Tribal members through educational activities that promote the use of tradi tional foods through hunting, gathering, gardening, cooking, food preservation and protecting our natural resources. Salem gardening Salem Community Garden plots available Cecilia Tolentino, 503-390-9494 Invitation to join grant committee The Healthy Traditions Steering Committee is seeking Tribal members who have an interest in aboriginal Siletz foods and ideas on how to improve the health of our Tribal membership. The committee meets monthly to plan events such as gathering, cooking, canning, smoking, gardening, fishing, hunting and more. If you live outside of Siletz, contact your area office about carpooling to the meeting with staff. Our next meeting is May 10 from 1-2:30 p.m. at the Siletz Community Health Clinic (second floor conference room). Sign up for a free plot at the com munity garden located near the Salem Area Office. If there is enough interest at each area office, we will sched ule the class for a date in June. Participants will learn how to: • • • • Select a location for a fruit tree Choose varieties Planting preparation Pruning and care Learn to grow your own veggies - and fruit (tomatoes are fruit) Siletz gardening Join the Healthy Traditions Garden! Located next to the Tenas Illahee Child care Center on West Buford in Siletz. Get one-on-one garden advice starting May 10 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-6 p.m. If you want to start a plot or garden in your yard, we can help you. Volunteer with local garden proj ects that help new gardeners grow their own food. Would you like to help an elder till his or her garden? Volunteer with the Siletz Valley School Garden? Or help build plots at the Healthy Traditions Garden? 8 • Siletz News • Shellfish gathering in Oregon, outside of Lincoln County May 15-21 Check your tide table for times in your area (there is a two-hour difference between Brookings and Seaside). You can get tide tables at fishing supply stores and online. Before you gather, remember to call the 24-hour shellfish safety information hotline at 800-448-2474. This recorded message is updated when there is any change in the status of a harvest area. Lab oratory results for “red tide” or shellfish toxins can change the status of a harvest area at any time. You can purchase an Oregon Depart ment of Fish and Wildlife Shellfish Gathering Permit at a local store. Find store locations at www.dfw.state.or.us/ resources/licenses/docs/Active_Agents.pdf. Mussel gathering for Memorial Day May 30 - Memorial Day Siletz Tribal Community Center Join Tribal members to gather mus sels for the Memorial Day dinner. Shellfish gathering in Lincoln County Siletz Tribal members can gather with no permits in Lincoln County as long as they carry -their Tribal ID card and obey Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife regulations and limits. If you would like to gather more than the ODFW limit, Siletz Cultural Shellfish Gathering Permits are available to Siletz Tribal members by stopping by the Tribal Natural Resources Department or by contacting Kelley Ellis at 541-444-8227 or 800-922-1399, ext. 1227. The Tribal permits are good only in Lincoln County.
