Chairman’s Report Delores Pigsley Legislation For the past several years, the Tribe has been interested in ways to improve the processing of our fee-to-trust applica tions. We have experienced an extremely lengthy process as it currently exists. We have worked with our congressio nal delegation and county governments. We are very close to having legislation introduced that will recognize our original reservation boundary. There are provisions in the legislation that may allow the fee-to-trust process to be handled in the same manner as it is with other Tribes that have a contiguous reservation boundary. This would speed up the process for several pieces of prop erty that have been pending for some time. Applications currently pending include a cemetery, Medicine Rock and several other parcels we hope to use for housing. Therefore, we want the legislation to clarify the Tribe’s original reservation area as an amendment to the Siletz Res toration Act. It implements the intent of the Indian Reorganization Act to reverse the loss of Tribal lands and restore a small portion of our original land base by allowing the Tribe to take land into trust (under the same provisions as other Indian Tribes) within our original reserva tion boundary. It ensures that the applications the Tribe submits in the defined geographic area will continue to be processed in the Northwest Regional Office. The bill would establish and confirm a working partnership between the Siletz Tribe and local counties. Visit from Shana Radford from Sen. Wyden’s office Shana Radford, a Hatfield Fellow working in Sen. Ron Wyden’s office, recently visited our Tribe. The Tribal Council visited with her in Lincoln City, then we drove to Siletz for a tour. Shana is of Nez Perce descent and was very understanding of our Tribal issues. We appreciate that the senator gave her the opportunity to come to Siletz for a visit and to discuss Tribal issues and concerns. We ended the visit at the Dance House. National Museum of the American Indian On July 8-10, the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) will host a Siletz Festival. The Tribe will host cultural displays, including basketry and regalia, a book promotion of The People Are Dancing Again and will conduct a Feather Dance. This is a unique opportunity for Siletz to share our history and culture. There will be a couple of Feather Dance exhibitions each day. Charles Wilkinson also will be in attendance for the book promotion. The Tribe was invited to perform when we met with Kevin Gover, NMAI museum director, last fall. Many visitors are expected at the museum in July and in Washington, D.C., in general. Tribal Council members will partici pate in the dances as well as the cultural displays and book promotion.
