Census 2010 Questionnaire is Quick, Easy and Confidential By Claire Wood, Tribal Planning, Tribal Liaison to the U.S. Census The 2010 Census questionnaire will be distributed in mid-March 2010. It is quick, easy and confidential. With only 10 short questions, the 2010 Census questionnaire is one of the shortest in history and takes just 10 minutes to complete. By law, the Cen sus Bureau cannot share an individual’s responses with anyone, including Tribal housing authorities, the INS and law enforcement entities. Question No. 9 will ask your race. You can choose one or more selections. The best thing for an American Indian to do is to choose the “American Indian or Alaska Native" box only. Print the name of the tribe in which you are enrolled in the squares directly below your selection. Confeder ated Tribes of Siletz Indians will not fit in the box, but you can use the space outside the boxes also. You also can abbreviate Conf Tribes Siletz" and your response will fit in the boxes. Please list your tribai affiliation even it you ¿ire not an enrolled Tribal member. The U.S. Census is a self-identification system. This means if you think you are an American Indian and check the American Indian box on the census form, that is how you will be counted. No one will question you. No comparisons with the enrollment data of the Tribe will be made. In order to be counted as an Ameri can Indian family, you must list the American Indian member of your family as Person 1 on the census form. It doesn’t matter if this is a male or female member of the family. Remember to choose American In dian or Alaska Native as your race and fill in your Tribal name in question 9. Permits are required and can be obtained at the Tribal Natural Resources office in the Tribal adminis tration building in Siletz from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays. If you live outside of the Siletz area, you can call the numbers at right to have a permit mailed to you. The permits are for Tribal member woodcutting for personal use only. This firewood cannot be sold. u The person named on the permit must be present when cutting and hauling the firewood. Tribal members wishing to cut wood for Tribal Elders must present a signed note from the Elder stating that the individual is authorized to cut firewood on their behalf. The note must include the Elder’s Tribal ID number. Permits are good for two weeks and allow up to two cords of wood to be cut on each permit. Each Tribal member is on each allowed up to five cords total per year from Tribal firewood units. This likely will be the only firewood area open until spring. What is the Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP)? This is a program that assists income-eligible Tribal member households with their heating costs Where does this program come from? This is a state program that used to be administered through the Community Service Consortium. In 2006, the Siletz Tribe was granted funding to administer the program in our 11-county service area. This allows the Siletz Tribe’s three area offices and Housing office to provide services to eligible Tribal households. Am I eligible? Up to $5,591.76 s‘ household members will be calculated at the intake. Do per capita and Elder stipends count as income? Yes, except for the Elder stipends that are paid out of timber revenue. At this time only Tribal Elders age 70 and older receive stipends from timber revenue. What if I am no longer employed? You will need to complete the Declaration of Personal Income form.
