Looking at Year Two of Siletz Tribal Language Project by Cova St. Onge On Sept. 25, the Siletz Tribe received continuation funds for the current Adminis tration for Native Americans Language Preservation grant. Our Tribal language project has been continued ... based on the successful implementation of your project...” Year one efforts have successfully produced 176 curriculum lessons, six stories and six games. Going into the second year of the Siletz Tribal Language Project, we will look to complete the conversion of the lesson plans into digital documents that will then be loaded onto the server. Visual aids and learning materials will be created to support the lessons, which will complete the curriculum package. In the classrooms of Siletz Valley School, pilot testing will occur with selected lessons. We will introduce the teachers to the curriculum and test the functioning of the lessons with students at each grade level. The language project efforts will benefit communities by bringing language les sons and classes right to your location. Year one included the purchase of video conferencing equipment that will make community language classes accessible to the larger community right from home. The video conferencing capabilities partnered with the online capabilities of the server will make distant language learning possible. It is our goal, at the conclusion of year two, that the language learning materials and community language classes will be easily accessed by our communities and Tribal families. Registration is for enrolled Siletz Tribal Youth in grades 7-12 regardless of resi dence. Registration is limited to 50 youth. There will be a date at which descendants' registration will be accepted if space is available. Registration is reserved in the order received. The Siletz Tribal Youth Conference is an annual opportunity for Tribal youth to come together to make new relationships and maintain established relationships. It of fers large group sessions and breakout sessions on a variety of topics, including Tribal culture/hi story, personal development, physical/mental/emotional self-care, managing finances, storytelling and other cultural practices. Sessions are designed to be active and fun. In addition to more formal sessions, time is set aside for large and small group activities. Youth are expected to treat themselves, each other and staff with respect. Conflicts or issues that arise will be addressed by staff in collaboration with the youth. Youth will have a designated adult mentor available to them for support, to address any concerns that might arise and who will be aware of their location and activity schedule. The conference is an alcohol- and drug-free event. A staff registered nurse will administer prescribed medications. Conference registration forms will be mailed using addresses available through the Tribal Enrollment Department. Registrations also will be available at each of the Tribal offices in Portland. Please call 541-444-9658. * * Tribal Energy Assistance Available The Tribal Housing Department has started taking appointments for the Low- Income Energy Assistance Program. On Oct. 1, the program opened up for Elders, disabled and families with Tribal children under age 10. On Nov. 1, energy assistance will be available for all Tribal families who are income-eligible. You must make an appointment and have all documents with you at the time of your application.
