LETTERS TO THE EDITOR To the editor: Where do 1 start? So many subjects demand attention and scrutiny. (Judge Gantenbien ruled against me 6/11/09 - I plan to appeal the decision.) I want mem bers to get their piece of the “pie,” not just crumbs left after less-than-favorable economic development actions. Chinook Winds Casino Resort (CWCR) gaming enterprise advertised for a general manager? It’s my opinion this position should not have been adver tised, rather it should be filled, as is, with Sar Richards. The salary for a GM is excessive in relation to the cost of living for Lincoln City. We cannot compare apples (Spirit Mountain) with oranges (CWCR). We don’t have the flexibility on the coast, income for some major businesses has taken a 20 percent cut each year for the past three years. This trend does not sup port increasing staffing or salary, instead we should promote/hire Tribal members and not re-advertise for positions recently eliminated or vacated. We should be cutting comers where possible and this is an appropriate place to begin. As a Tribal member is currently in this position, it should remain so. It would be a proper action to identify another Tribal member whom Sar would mentor to fill the position he previously held, with a “reasonable” salary. Time for advertising/recruiting costs is punitively excessive and with the econ omy as it is we do not have the luxury for increased expenses of a GM as mentioned by our Tribal chairman in her report. CWCR has intentions to remodel suites in July? Summertime is bad timing, To the editor: Our state legislature is in session until at least June 30, charged with the respon sibility of balancing Oregon’s 2009-11 budget at a most challenging time. With a predicted income shortfall of over $4 bil lion, legislators must weigh the needs of all our citizens and adjust the budget through some combination of cutting costs and raising revenue. It's a tightrope act! Lincoln County is fortunate to have two very dedicated legislators: Sen. Joanne Verger of Coos Bay and Rep. Jean Cowan of Newport. Both are aware of the challenges, care deeply and listen to their constituents. They “get it.” The Central Coast chapter of Stand for Children sup ports their work as they represent the needs and values of our district. When families lose their jobs and perhaps their homes, they need more, not fewer services. Education is the key to helping children succeed but when school budgets are cut, class sizes increase and children can get lost in the system. Child abuse cases increase during a recession, but needed services for hurting children face deep cuts. These are just a few of the hurdles facing people here in Lincoln County and all over Oregon. Stand for Children statewide has delivered over 8,000 postcards to legis lators stating our support for increased state revenues and the need to maintain critical services for vulnerable citizens.
